Job Description

The Domestic Violence Advocate - Lethality Prevention provides safety planning, case management and advocacy services to victims of domestic violence. The role receives referrals from police calls in response to high‑lethality domestic violence victims, screens victims for lethality indicators, connects victims with resources, and ensures that data from lethality assessments is tracked. The advocate facilitates support groups, serves as liaison between law enforcement officers and victims, assists victims in completing paperwork for civil protective orders, and provides support during court hearings.

Responsibilities

& Essential Functions
  • Assist law enforcement personnel with domestic violence complaint calls and in screening victims for lethality indicators; take referrals from law enforcement after lethality screenings.
  • Ensure data is collected for State reporting on St. Joseph County Lethality Assessments.
  • Facilitate and coordinate High‑Risk Team meetings, including documentation preparation.
  • Facilitate domestic violence support groups and other supportive groups.
  • Provide case management to assigned clients individually, exercise professional judgment, develop client service plans, and maintain current records on assigned cases (intake, progress notes, etc.) in consultation with other staff.
  • Maintain familiarity with local housing and employment opportunities, assist clients in developing job opportunities, preparing for interviews, arranging transportation to appointments, and finding suitable housing.
  • Identify agency resources for client needs, maintain liaison with community agencies (including law enforcement), keep current information on agency resources and intake procedures, and support clients with referral intake processes.
  • Participate in in‑service training and regular staff meetings.
  • Participate in multi‑disciplinary team staffing, team meetings, case consulting, community activities and organizations; prepare and deliver appropriate lectures to the public as requested by the agency.
  • Participate in planning and evaluation sessions for continued growth of the program; work as part of a team to assure quality delivery of services.
  • Under the supervisor’s direction, provide consultation and education services to community agencies, groups, and individuals.
  • Remain current concerning new trends in domestic violence services.
  • Ensure appropriate and accurate documentation regarding client interactions, and ensure compliance with agency and grant standards.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Experience
  • Undergraduate degree in psychology, sociology, or a related field.
  • One to three years of experience in a related field or other appropriate combination of education and experience.
