Reports to: Asphalt Supervisor and Asphalt Crew Leader
Job SummaryPerforms a wide variety of heavy duty manual labor on the Asphalt grinding crew, including milling, grinding, shoveling, and backpack blowing on city streets and roadways.
Responsibilities- Assists in patching and sealing streets when needed.
- Shovel sand, gravel, millings, and asphalt to and from trucks.
- May act as a flagman along city streets to warn motorists of road construction in progress.
- Clean up trash and debris along city streets when needed on job sites.
- Rake, shovel, sweep, and pick up leaves as required by City Leaf Pick-up Program if within the allotted time frame of employment.
- Carry in or remove heavy desks, file cabinets, and other office equipment in city offices.
- Perform other physically heavy duties as may be required.
- Good work record with prompt arrival and attendance.
- Ability to communicate, get along with, and work well with fellow employees.
Valid Indiana Driver’s License.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Good mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to use simple hand tools relating to basic job assignments.
- Knowledge of and ability to follow safety rules and regulations required on assigned work projects.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions; ability to learn the methods and practices used in road repair; perform strenuous work in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to use: shovel, rake, lute rake, leaf rake, sledge hammer, air hammer, hand tools, and other tools of the trade.
- Follow one or two step instructions of routine and repetitive tasks.
- Carry out detailed, but uninvolved written or verbal instructions.
- Follow written, verbal, or diagrammatic instructions.
- Add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers.
- Ability to write identifying information; request supplies verbally or in writing.
- Good vision with or without correction.
- Exerting in excess of 100 lbs. in force occasionally.
- Exerting in excess of 50 lbs. of force frequently.
- Exerting in excess of 20 lbs. of force constantly.
- Body agility and equilibrium is emphasized.
- Position requires above normal lifting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, working, pushing, pulling, grasping, and use of legs, upper body, and back muscles.
Duties are performed outside in a variety of weather conditions; extreme hot and cold, wind, rain, snow, dirt, dust, noise, grease, unsanitary conditions. Hazards include chemicals, moving and vibrating equipment, and street vehicle traffic.
Post Offer Testing Required- The City of Elkhart is a Drug Free Workplace. Therefore successfully passing a post offer drug screen is required (random drug testing may be conducted after employment).
- Background checks producing acceptable BMV and criminal history reports required.
