Position: Certified Nursing Assistant (Part Time, 24 hrs per week)

Overview

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is an important member of the patient care team, supporting patients, nurses and overall unit functioning. The CNA is responsible for helping create and maintain a safe, healing environment for our patients, and a healthy working environment for the care team. The CNA is expected to perform duties autonomously and also at the direction of the RN.

The CNA reports to the Director of Patient Services.

Responsibilities
  • Assists patients as needed with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as feeding, dressing, and mobilizing.
  • Attends to patient personal hygiene needs such as brushing teeth, bathing, and toileting.
  • Repositions the patient for comfort and per protocol. Observes patients for changes in behavior or condition and notifies the nurse of same.
  • Takes patient vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, O2 saturation, and temperature, and reports to the RN any findings that are not within normal limits.
  • Monitors patient intake and output and notifies RN of abnormal increases or decreases. Documents all findings accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Supports a safe and healing environment for each patient by keeping rooms neat and tidy, and free from clutter. Ensures all patient safety interventions are in place at all times, such as keeping call light and patient belongings within reach of patient; bed/chair alarms are on and functioning; and other patient-specific interventions as directed by the RN.
  • Assists RN to answer call lights quickly and determines how best to assist a patient. Rounds frequently on patients, assisting as needed. Ensures patient whiteboards are complete and updated. Helps keep patient belongings safe and accounted for.
  • Recognizes the importance of customer service, is welcoming and friendly, assists and guides visitors as needed, answers the phone in a professional manner and tone. Is sensitive to cultural differences and treats all people with respect and compassion. Maintains a professional personal appearance and manner at all times, in accordance with SVH policy.
  • Supports a healthy working environment by volunteering discretionary effort, remaining curious and non-judgmental, maintaining a positive attitude and fostering teamwork among all disciplines. Seeks solutions and engages in problem-solving, avoiding gossip and negativity.
  • Supports a safe working environment by keeping hallways and workstations free of equipment and clutter. Puts equipment and unused supplies away when no longer needed. Submits work orders for faulty or broken equipment to the appropriate team (Biomed, Engineering, IT). Cleans and disinfects equipment per SVH Infection Prevention policy. Practices hand hygiene before and after every patient interaction and when hands are visibly soiled.

    Reports unanticipated events as appropriate via the Midas system.
  • Practices financial stewardship by not overusing or wasting supplies or linens. Supports patient flow by assisting with admissions, transfers and discharges.
  • Maintains personal responsibility for keeping all employment requirements in good standing, including but not limited to CNA license, BLS certification, annual employee health requirements and annual employee education requirements (i.e. Health streams, skills lab).
Qualifications
  • Education
    :
    High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience
    :
    Minimum of six months as CNA in acute care setting.
  • Licenses & Certifications
    :
    Current Certified Nursing Assistant license by the State of California;
    Basic Life Support from an American Heart Association approved agency.
  • Required Skills & Knowledge
    :
    Basic anatomy; normal ranges for vital signs; ability to prioritize tasks, care for multiple patients, be flexible.
Compensation

Actual compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
