Faculty Responsibilities

In addition to teaching and scholarship, faculty are expected to engage in service to the University, profession, and community. These responsibilities include advising students, participation in campus and system-wide communities, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participating in traditional academic functions. Sonoma State is committed to the Teacher/Scholar model and emphasizes support of undergraduate research and other professional opportunities for students.

Faculty are also expected to foster our commitment to the CSU Graduation Initiative 2025 through excellent teaching, advising, and mentoring. Potential applicants are encouraged to review the University’s Reappointment, Tenure, and Promotion Policy. During the first two years of the probationary period, the instructional assignment will be reduced by two courses per academic year to support the development of research, scholarship, and/or creative activities and to help meet retention, tenure, and promotion requirements.

The Department

The Engineering & Computer Science Department offers a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with 250 majors, and a minor in computer science. The five CS faculty have expertise spanning theoretical and applied areas. Our CS program is rooted in a liberal arts education and aligned with the IEEE/ACM Curricula. We value teaching excellence and mentoring and are committed to expanding and diversifying participation in computer science.

We promote collaboration between faculty and students for research projects and software system projects with research and industrial applications. Duties of the Position

The successful candidate will teach computer science courses across the B.S. curriculum, offer upper-division electives in their areas of expertise, demonstrate potential for a sustained research career, and actively foster an undergraduate research program. Collaboration with industry professionals and seeking external funding are encouraged. Teaching excellence is a core expectation.
