Faculty Employment Opportunity

Starting August 2026

Our Commitment

Sonoma State University is a federally-designated Hispanic Serving Institution. We are committed to equal opportunity and to employing faculty and staff reflecting the linguistic, ethnic, and cultural diversity of the region and state.

Guided by our core values of diversity, sustainability, community engagement, and adaptability, SSU offers an education that fosters intellectual, social, and personal growth. SSU is a public liberal arts and sciences university and, as the only member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges in California, we prepare students for active citizenship and public service. We foster a vibrant campus life with a co-curricular environment in which the campus engages broadly.

SSU is committed to creating a community without bias or intolerance. We expect students, faculty, and staff to work together to honor this commitment and to create an open and inclusive environment. We aim to facilitate spaces where all can grow by building on students’ assets as they explore new knowledge, including creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, experimentation, empathy, and communication. The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty, staff, administration, and students to achieve these goals.

We especially welcome candidates committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Faculty Responsibilities

Beyond teaching and scholarship, faculty are expected to engage in service to the University, profession, and community. Responsibilities include advising students, participating in campus and system-wide communities, maintaining office hours, collaborating with colleagues, and participating in traditional academic functions.

SSU supports the Teacher/Scholar model and emphasizes undergraduate research and other professional opportunities for students. Faculty are also expected to support the CSU Graduation Initiative 2025 through excellent teaching, advising, and mentoring. During the first two years of the probationary period, the instructional assignment will be reduced by two courses per academic year to help establish research, scholarship, and/or creative activities and support retention, tenure, and promotion requirements.

All faculty must be able to work effectively in a multicultural environment.

The Department

The Department of Engineering & Computer Science offers a B.S. in Computer Science with ~250 majors and a minor in computer science. The five tenured and tenure-track CS faculty cover theoretical and applied areas. The program is rooted in liberal arts education and follows the IEEE/ACM CS Curricula. We value teaching excellence and mentoring students and are committed to expanding and diversifying participation in computer science.

We encourage candidates with similar goals and relevant experience to apply.

We promote close collaboration between faculty and students on research projects worthy of publication and on software system projects with research and industrial applications. Our graduates pursue roles at diverse companies and some continue to graduate study.

The successful candidate will teach computer science courses across the B.S. curriculum, offer upper-division electives in their areas of expertise, demonstrate potential for a sustained research career, and actively foster an undergraduate research program. Collaboration with industry and seeking external funding are encouraged. Teaching excellence is a core expectation.

In addition to teaching and scholarship, faculty are expected to engage in academic advising, assist with program revision, and serve on department, College, and campus-wide committees. SSU emphasizes the Teacher/Scholar model and undergraduate research support.

Required Qualifications

To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have:
