Performs inspection, installation, service maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical systems on locomotives and coaches. Accountable for the prompt completion of electrical duties, and other similar/related duties as assigned.
Minimum Knowledge and
Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Electro‑mechanical job experience, journeyman license, apprentice position, or other related applicable experience preferred (i.e., automotive/aircraft/railroad industrial troubleshooting and repair)
- Works with Alternating and Direct (AC/DC) Electrical Current at both low voltage and high voltage levels
- Understands and respects the dangers of working with large batteries, capacitors, contractors, etc.
Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to Install, maintain, and repair electrical systems and equipment
- Read and interpret electrical schematics
- Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical circuits and equipment
- Exercise judgment in the selection of proper tools, methods, and equipment.
- Read/understand written/verbal instructions for successful completion of equipment upgrades and modifications
- Exercises familiarity with specialty electrical tooling and electrical meters with proven ability to use such tooling
- Must possess strong oral, written communication, and interpersonal skills
- Able to learn in a classroom and/or shop floor setting
Key Accountabilities (Essential Job Duties):
- Demonstrates understanding and adheres to the KCS principles of Employee Engagement, Operational Excellence, Safety & Security, and Economic Performance
- Completes all work in compliance with FRA, OSHA, MBTA, KCS, and other local, state, and federal authorities
- Installs, inspects, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs all electrical circuits, conduits, components and systems within railroad locomotives and passenger coaches, as designated by the KCS Mechanical Department management
- Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with supervisors, co‑workers, vendors, and all other KCS personnel
- Successfully communicates with a variety of disciplines at all levels with both internal and external staff
- Performs other related duties as assigned in normal operation and/or in emergencies
- Safely performs all duties without risk of injury to yourself or others
- Complies with all related safety rules and procedures including reporting hazards as required
- Documents job tasks and work performed manually or electronically and submitted as required
- Attends and participates in all assigned training
- Completes other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- A valid driver’s license is required to successfully travel throughout the Commuter Rail network and locations as assigned.
Working Conditions (including Physical Demands):
- Mechanical shop‑based work
- Work can be in small and enclosed work spaces
- This position requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, climb ladders, talk and listen, lift (up to 50 pounds) and reach with both hands and both arms
- Must be able to travel and work at all hours and at all commuter rail locations in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, in all weather conditions
- Position requires ability to climb onto rail equipment
- Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are also required
- The position will be exposed to loud environments, outdoor weather, fumes, or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibration, and electricity
