Overview
We are seeking a full-time (40-hour) Medical Assistant/Orthopedic Tech to join our team. As true partners to our nurses and providers, our Medical Assistant/Ortho Techs have the opportunity to work autonomously at the top of their education and certification while also contributing as an integral member of a collaborative care team.
Our practice is open Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. The 40-hour weekly schedule is staggered based on the needs of the practice. There may be opportunities for cross-coverage at our on-site Orthopedic Walk-In Clinic, which operates Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 8:00pm and Saturdays from 8:00am to 1:00pm. This role encourages flexibility, with the ability to work occasional early mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed.
Staff may be asked to float to other departments within the WHP system as needed to ensure coverage and patient support.
- Under supervision, provide specialized support in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of orthopedic conditions.
- Assist in the application of casts, braces, splints, and other orthopedic devices, and may also assist in surgical procedures.
- Set up and apply traction in accordance with standard procedures and instructions.
- Assist with the application of casts, braces, and prostheses. Requisition, store, and dispense supplies as directed.
- Inspect and maintain orthopedic equipment.
- Instruct selected patients in cast care, simple exercises, and crutch or cane use. Apply sterile and non-sterile dressings.
- Make splints, slings and foot pieces.
- May make rounds with doctors of all orthopedic patients and carry out instructions.
- Cut and fashion devices from metal, plastic, leather and wood using equipment and hand tools.
High School Diploma or Equivalent required
Licenses and Credentials- Basic Life Support [BLS Certification] preferred
- Orthopaedic Technologist Certification [OTC] - National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists, Inc. preferred
Related patient care experience 2-3 years; required experience in orthopedics 0-1 year preferred
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- General knowledge of standard orthopedic procedures and practices.
- Working knowledge of orthopedic devices and appliances and proper fitting.
- Knowledge of medical terminology pertaining to orthopedics use.
- Communicate effectively when instructing patients in the use and care of orthopedic devices and appliances.
- Maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff.
- Be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients.
- Ortho Tech Certification obtained within 1 year of hire
