Overview
POSITION:
Girls Softball Assistant Coach - BCHS
POSITION TITLE: ASSISTANT COACH
REPORTS TO: BUILDING PRINCIPAL / SUPERVISOR OF ATHLETICS
SUMMARY: To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success while at the same time helping the athlete to achieve an appreciation for the values of discipline, sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem.
Responsibilities- Has full responsibility for the overall supervision of their program, including the junior varsity and freshman teams.
- Is in charge of assignments and duties of assistant coaches working in their sport.
- Is responsible for the general upkeep, protection, and inventory of the equipment and uniforms used in their sport including the junior varsity and freshman teams.
- Is responsible for assuring that assistant coaches and themselves know the existing state and league regulations and abide by them at all times.
- Assist the athletic coordinator in providing transportation and requirements for tournament and special sport events.
- Attend all league meetings regarding scheduling and rule updates specific to their sport.
- Responsible for developing their schedules for all levels of play.
- Communicates all schedule changes to the Director of Athletics or athletic coordinator.
- Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment storage areas.
- Assist in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices, and adheres to scheduled facility times.
- Makes recommendations for awards and is responsible for clarification of the award policy to athletes.
- Participates in the budgeting process with the Director of Athletics by establishing requirements for the next season. Is responsible for explaining equipment guidelines as to type, color, style, or technical specifications. Is responsible for operating within the established budget.
- Has a thorough knowledge of policies and procedures in the student-athlete handbook and CIAC handbook. Explains and reinforces rules of training and code of conduct and CIAC eligibility rules to all members of the team.
- Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by the staff.
- Follows and has a good understanding of the basic NCAA recruiting rules for their specific sport.
- Monitors equipment rooms and coaches' office, ensuring athletes are in authorized areas at appropriate times and never leave athletes unsupervised during scheduled practices.
- Examines locker rooms, equipment rooms, and playing safe areas before and after team use for cleanliness and safety.
- Secures all doors, lights, windows, gates, locks, and alarm when leaving the building or outside facility when custodians are not on duty.
- Will evaluate assistant coaches and programs and submit necessary postseason reports to the Director of Athletics at the conclusion of the season.
- Is responsible for the actions and conduct of their team whenever they are under their jurisdiction.
- Is responsible for the general health and welfare of student-athletes in their sport.
- Communicates instructions and commands using clear, simple, and positive language.
- Pays appropriate attention to athletes who are injured or ill and follows the protocol set by the athletic department for injured athletes.
- Organizes pre-season meetings for players and coaches.
- Is in charge of evaluating performance of student-athletes and providing suitable feedback, balancing critique with positive and motivating comments.
- Responsible for maintaining good public relations with media, parents, officials, opponents, and fans.
- Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care, and use.
- Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
- Maintains current Connecticut coaching certification with the State of Connecticut Department of Education.
- Performs other duties that are consistent with the nature of the position and may be requested by the Director of Athletics and/or principal.
Note:
Coaches must meet certification requirements set by the State of Connecticut.
- Coaching Certificate Required.
- Valid Connecticut coaching certification or temporary emergency coaching permit.
- Updated CPR/First Aid training approved by Connecticut State Department of Education.
- Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
- Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport.
Staff assigned to these positions is expected to perform their duties with the following expectations in mind:
- All supervisory responsibilities must be fulfilled. Students must be supervised at all times.
- Ability to read, interpret directions, write reports and communicate effectively with students, parents and other staff.
- Ability to calculate figures and perform math functions relevant to the position and provide budget input when requested.
