The role

The Ageing and Movement Research Group (AMRG) consists of a team of researchers from multidisciplinary backgrounds and is led by Associate Professor in Ageing and Movement Disorders, Dr Emily Henderson. The overall aim of the AMRG is to improve the care of older adults with complex disease, developing models of care and training that address the increasing societal and clinical needs of an ageing population.

The postholder will support the programme through the application of a range of techniques and/or to collect and analyse data that enable the project to progress. This position involves working supervised and unsupervised, including undertaking training and development to gain the necessary skills and experience to become a Research Associate with support and guidance from the line manager and the project team.

Please note this is a full‑time post and applications for part‑time won't be considered.

What will you be doing? Research Responsibilities
  • Conduct experiments or other forms of research studies with access to guidance and direct supervision from other members of staff but may be required to operate with some level of independence.
  • Collect and record data from experiments or other forms of research studies such as interviews and field visits, ensuring that protocols and practices are adhered to, thereby enabling results to be valid and useful for the project.
  • Make some limited contribution to the design of the experiments or other forms of research studies, or amendment to protocols, in consultation with a senior project team member.
  • Analyse data and to present the results orally or in writing to their line manager and the project team as required.
  • Contribute to the writing up of research results and/or methods for publications developed by their manager and their project team.
Administration Responsibilities
  • May contribute to the administrative infrastructure of the group to ensure that projects are able to operate effectively and efficiently without delay whilst ensuring that the University receives value for money.
  • Will be responsible for the occasional training and supervision of others within the group (including students) to ensure their safety and to ensure that they apply techniques correctly.
  • Will drive their own professional development and, with the support of their manager, to actively look for opportunities to develop skills, knowledge, and experience.
  • Will be required to take responsibility for administrative work associated with their research; for example, organising meetings, taking minutes and meeting notes to ensure project actions are logged, recruitment data is recorded and where necessary uploaded to relevant electronic repositories, systems and databases.
You should apply if
  • You have previous experience of working in a clinical research setting, especially working with people with Parkinson’s.
  • You have demonstratable expertise in research methodology and data analysis.
  • You are able to use information technology effectively and manage data intelligently, for example by using STATA or R.
  • You are experienced in using REDCap or equivalent databases.
  • You have a first class degree in neuroscience
  • You are committed to working compassionately and sensitively with vulnerable research participants, including patients and caregivers.
  • You are a clear and confident communicator, ideally with experience of presenting research to both academics and lay audiences.
