POSITION TITLE

Library Media Specialist – Greene Hills School (Grades K‑5)

DEPARTMENT

Teacher

REPORTS TO

School Principal

SUMMARY

To provide all students with a diverse library media program containing a wide variety of materials that will invite intellectual growth and aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of media center resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operate and supervise the media center(s) assigned.
  • Evaluate, select, requisition and maintain new media center materials.
  • Assist teachers in selecting books, electronic resources, computer programs and other instructional materials and make media center materials available to supplement the instructional program.
  • Inform teachers and staff about new materials acquired by the media center.
  • Instruct students and teachers how to access Destiny, the online library catalog.
  • Arrange interlibrary loan of materials for teacher use.
  • Collaborate with teachers to plan standards‑based instruction for information literacy and use of information and technological tools.
  • Promote appropriate conduct of students using media center facilities.
  • Help students develop habits of independent information literacy work and skills in the use of print and digital reference materials for planned assignments.
  • Collaborate with teachers to support learning and with diverse‑needs students.
  • Advocate for and design independent reading promotion programming.
  • Prepare and administer the media center budget.
  • Supervise media center staff in performance of their duties.
  • Plan and supervise distribution and storage of all media materials and equipment.
  • Plan and organize technology utilization within the media center.
  • Maintain professional competence through in‑service education and self‑selected professional growth activities.
  • Serve on faculty and curriculum committees.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise classroom and student volunteers and parent helpers, and perform general supervisory duties as scheduled.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Library Science or related field.
  • Completion of required certification coursework.
Certification

Valid Connecticut Library Media Specialist (062) Teaching Certificate.

Skills and Abilities
  • Reading, analyzing, and interpreting periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations.
  • Writing memos, reports and correspondence.
  • Presenting information and responding to questions from administrators, staff, parents and the public.
  • Basic mathematical skills including arithmetic, ratios, percent and elementary algebra and geometry.
  • Basic computer skills: email, word processing, accounting, databases and instructional presentations; familiarity with library automation systems and electronic research resources.
  • Problem‑solving and practical reasoning ability.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons that support school objectives and meet student needs.
  • Communication and relationship‑building with students, peers and parents.
  • Awareness of district requirements, board policies and code of professional responsibility for teachers.
Physical Demands

May be required to stand, talk, walk, sit, push or lift up to 50 pounds. Must meet vision and other demands described, and ensure safety and well‑being of others.

Work Environment

Moderate to loud noise level; work indoors and occasionally outdoors.

Salary and Hours

Per contract. Salary details as per contract.

Hours:

7:55 am – 2:55 pm.
