Definition
Under the general direction and supervision of the Director of Maintenance or their designee, the Energy Systems Mechanic (ESM) I/II performs skilled mechanical maintenance duties relating to the inspection, repair, installation and alteration of heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems and related equipment. This position additionally performs preventative maintenance and routine servicing of systems and equipment, including troubleshooting and diagnostics.

This position resides in Homer.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED. A minimum of two years' HVAC field technician experience or related experience, or the completion of an accredited HVAC trade training program. Must have experience with oil and gas boilers, including high efficiency gas boilers. Have professional plumbing experience. Must possess a current, valid and unrestricted Alaska driver's license.
ESM II: Meets all ESM I minimum qualifications. Works independently on a daily basis; and can demonstrate sufficient knowledge of Borough facilities, internal processes and have sufficient mastery of required trade knowledge including working knowledge and ability to utilize the Boroughs DDC system, or holds a State of Alaska Journeyman plumbing license, or has five years of experience with maintenance and Installation of HVAC Systems, or Holds a State of Alaska Boiler Operator III License.

AC and refrigeration experience as well as other related trade experiences can substitute HVAC experience at supervisors' discretion.

Essential Functions

Essential Functions (ESM I):
  • Troubleshoots and repairs, rebuilds or replaces a wide variety of HVAC equipment, including but not limited to: boilers, pumps, compressors, fans, electric motors, exchangers, air and fluid distribution systems.
  • Performs work on a preventive maintenance program. Conducts regular preventative maintenance testing and inspections of systems and equipment, making necessary adjustments or repairs.
  • Communicates with department and facility staff regularly to investigate and discover needs and issues as well as to inform impacted personnel of the resolution.
  • Manages and notes daily tasks, work time, materials and activities to correlate with a work-order time/asset management system. Frequently utilizes Computers to interact with facility control systems, the Boroughs Asset Control System.
  • Reads sequence of operations descriptions, blue prints and P& in order to diagnose and repair issues.
  • May be required to perform plumbing installation and repairs.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools in a manner congruent with safety policies and procedures.
  • Performs required work with reference to and compliance of all governing code (EPA, OSHA, NFPA, IBC, UBC, UPC, NEC, ASME etc.)
  • May troubleshoot and repair/replace appliances.
  • May perform asbestos removal/containment duties.
  • Essential Functions (ESM II):
  • Independently perform job related procedures
  • Analyze a variety of data to troubleshoot, diagnose, repair and/or modify all types of HVAC equipment.
  • Analyses and evaluates data to optimize and improve energy management systems.
  • Monitors and configures direct digital control and pneumatic control systems. Able to: diagnose system issues and make system modifications. Repairs, replacement and/or calibrations of components and related equipment.
  • Performs moderate renovation projects relating to the replacement or upgrade of departmental systems.
  • Performs skilled electrical tasks including the utilization of meters and testing equipment in support of required activities (electrical multi-meters, amp sensing, flow testing, combustion analyzing, etc.) relating to the repair of HVAC equipment such as: fault tracing, connection of motors to control centers, as well as the replacement of such electrical equipment and components.
  • Other Functions:
  • Position requires flying in a small aircraft and being away from home for 3-4 days.
  • Position requires responding to incidents during off hours.
  • May respond to oil spills, propane leaks and other emergencies.
  • Responsible for cleaning up after each project. Leave work area, job site and vehicle clean and safe.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
