Position Summary
The Field Safety Intern will support the Safety Department by assisting with the implementation and monitoring of safety programs across active heavy civil construction projects. This role provides hands‑on exposure to field operations while developing practical experience in construction safety, regulatory compliance, hazard recognition, and safety leadership.
The intern will spend the majority of time in the field alongside crews, supervisors, and safety professionals to promote a strong safety culture and ensure work is performed in accordance with company policies and applicable OSHA regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Assist with jobsite safety inspections, audits, and observations
- Participate in Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) meetings and safety meetings
- Identify and correct unsafe conditions and behaviors
- Communicate findings to supervision
- Support incident and near‑miss investigations as needed
- Verify proper use of PPE and compliance with company safety policies
- Maintain safety records, inspection logs, and training documentation
- Support continuous improvement initiatives
- Observe heavy civil operations including earthwork, bridge, roadway, asphalt, and traffic control activities
- Application of OSHA 1926 construction standards in the field
- Hazard recognition and risk assessment skills
- Exposure to safety leadership and communication practices
- Understanding of heavy civil construction operations and equipment
- Mentorship from experienced safety and operations professionals
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Safety
- Strong interest in construction safety and field operations
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and jobsite conditions
- Strong communication and observational skills
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
- OSHA 10‑Hour or OSHA 30‑Hour Construction Training
- Prior construction or industrial field experience
- Familiarity with construction tools, equipment, and terminology
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to walk uneven terrain and active construction sites
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally
- Exposure to noise, dust, heat, cold, and moving equipment
- Ability to wear required PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, boots, and high‑visibility clothing
This position is primarily field‑based and requires regular presence on active heavy civil construction sites. Interns must comply with all company safety policies and actively support a safe and healthy workplace.
