Job Summary: The Emergency Department Navigator is responsible for facilitating patient flow through the Emergency Department to provide optimum efficiency of department resources and timely management of patient care. Coordinates with Charge Nurses, physicians, department staff and nursing supervisors to assure efficient movement of patients into, and out of, the Emergency Department.
- Demonstrates the ability to perform specific competencies as listed on the competency validation checklist(s).
- Demonstrates the ability to coordinate patient flow in an efficient manner through collaboration with hospital and medical staff.
- Determines bed placement of EMS and walk-in patients in collaboration with the Charge Nurse/Waiting Room Coordinator. Maintain Team Triage Model to ensure initial assessments are completed, prioritization of patients to appropriate areas, and timely medication administration by clinical staff.
- Advise Providers/Physicians when all orders are complete.
- Facilitate movement of patients to appropriate pods and ensure patients are dispositioned timely.
- Identify and address throughput barriers with the Charge Nurse and ED Leadership, and attend all department throughput meeting during assigned shift.
- During moments of increased census flex to assume a patient assignment.
- Meets mutually agreed upon performance goals/objectives established annually as listed on the Performance Management Plan.
- Assists with ensuring customer needs are met (staff, M.D., patient, etc.) and document in Orbit.
- Ensures the privacy of our patients and confidentiality of their Protected Health Information (PHI).
- Assists with maintaining an environment that promotes patient safety.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the occurrence reporting system and reports trends in occurrences to staff, quarterly. This information is used to improve patient safety.
- Demonstrates ability to manage multiple tasks and projects in a productive manner.
- Demonstrates ability to adapt communication approaches to different members of the interdisciplinary team.
- Exhibits self-assurance; is assertive and innovative when collaborating with physicians and staff.
