DNREC’s Delaware Shorebird Project and marsh bird monitoring project work to monitor and conserve bird species which rely on Delaware’s coastal and marsh habitats for migratory stopover or breeding.  for more information about the Division of Fish & Wildlife

Summary Statement

This position assists the Coastal Waterbird Biologist, Marsh Bird Biologist, and their teams. Technician responsibilities will be field-heavy, floating between the two teams, including marsh bird nest searching/monitoring, point counts, shorebird flock surveys and resights, trailering/operating boats, data processing, and assisting with shorebird cannon netting and marsh bird mist netting. Applicants must be available to work an irregular schedule, including a Thursday-Sunday work week during the 3-week May migration survey season.

This is not a beach-nesting bird position (piping plovers, etc). Job duration is early April through early October, some flexibility possible.

Essential Functions
  • Provides technical support in studies, surveys and research projects.
  • Survey and monitor bird populations.
  • Trapping and banding.
  • Work cooperatively with other seasonals, volunteers and Division of Fish and Wildlife staff.
  • Provides technical information and assistance to the public.
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares reports.
  • Assists in data entry.
  • Maintains records and reports detailing daily activities.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Control Technician II

  • Six months experience in conducting field work to collect samples and survey data.
  • Six months experience in math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, or decimals.
  • Six months experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Six months experience in narrative report writing.
  • Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

This is a Casual/Seasonal position which is a non-pension eligible position without healthcare and/or other benefits.
