Overview

The Raptor, Grassland, and Forest Bird Program works to monitor and protect bird species of conservation concern found in Delaware.

Seasonal position with the Delaware's Species Conservation and Research Program to assist the State Raptor, Grassland, and Forest Bird Biologist. Primary responsibilities include bird surveys, identifying birds by sight and sound, monitoring nest boxes as part of the Delaware Kestrel Partnership, installing and maintaining nest boxes, and trapping, capturing and banding various birds of prey, grassland, and forest bird species. Daily work may require walking up to five miles on various terrain, operating and maintaining four-wheel drive vehicles, carrying equipment, climbing high ladders, and using binoculars and a spotting scope to distinguish bird species and color bands at a distance.

This field work may require long hours under strenuous or uncomfortable field conditions (e.g., heat and humidity, biting insects), on a flexible schedule (some extended days and weekend hours). Must be able to work independently and must be able to work in an efficient manner with good time management. Position may also assist with equipment inventory and maintenance, data entry, and assist with other wildlife research projects.

Applicants must be available for irregular work hours during the peak field season in Spring and Summer, including willingness to work on holidays, weekends, and outside of typical work hours, though a maximum five-day work week would be maintained, primarily Monday through Friday.

Candidates should have experience relevant to some or all of the listed field skills and particularly those relating to bird identification and bird banding. Flexibility and good communication are a must during this highly productive field season, and diligence and attention to detail vital to the data processing and dissemination that follows.

Responsibilities
  • Provides technical support in studies, surveys and research projects.
  • Survey and monitor bird populations.
  • Trapping and banding.
  • Work cooperatively with other seasonals, volunteers and Division of Fish and Wildlife staff.
  • Provides technical information and assistance to the public.
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares reports.
  • Assists in data entry.
  • Maintains records and reports detailing daily activities.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
  • Six months experience in conducting field work to collect samples and survey data.
  • Six months experience in math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, or decimals.
  • Six months experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Six months experience in narrative report writing.
  • Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

All new hires are required to report to the Statewide New Employee Orientation (SNEO) on their first day of employment. Sessions are held at designated locations in Kent or New Castle County.
