Summary Statement

This position is assigned to the Transportation Management Center (TMC), a 24‑hour planning, engineering, and transportation operations facility. The role involves operating multiple traffic control monitoring and information systems, incident and event planning, and general dispatching operations. It requires rotational shift work, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours during incidents or emergencies. Applicants will work closely with the public to field concerns and answer questions on behalf of the Department.

The position is part of a career ladder series with growth opportunities up to an EPS IV level.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.

  • Inspects infrastructure to ensure compliance with design plans, material specifications, safety requirements, construction processes, local, state, and federal codes and ongoing maintenance requirements; documents and reports compliance or deficiencies.
  • Designs, develops, or reviews engineering projects or site layouts, alignments, profiles, studies, graphs, and related activities.
  • Compiles and records notes, sketches, test results, inspection data, and other information to document compliance and/or develop designs, specifications, reports, maps, and geographically based data.
  • Conducts various studies to be used by others to analyze needs or develop plans, record characteristics, and related activities.
  • Conducts data analysis to determine accuracy of data collected, develop recommendations, develop corrective designs, and ensure compliance.
  • Tests or evaluates the quality of materials or designs to verify adherence to contracts and specifications.
  • Obtains survey data such as angles, elevations, points, and contours using electronic distance measuring equipment and other surveying instruments.
  • Calculates or measures area and volume dimensions, horizontal and vertical geometry, profile and component specifications, and material testing dimensions using calculators or computers.
  • Operates computer‑assisted drafting equipment or other tools of the trade, and uses automated information systems and computer software to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve, and report on data.
  • Reads and interprets plans, specifications, blueprints, and other engineering documents.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Job Requirement Series – Engineer/Planning/Surveying Technician II

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  • Traffic – Transportation Management Center (TMC):
    Six months experience in applied mathematical computations.
  • Six months experience in interpreting construction plans and details, schematics or technical drawings.
  • Knowledge of using intelligent transportation systems to perform transportation management, including optimizing traffic flow and operations.
  • Knowledge of developing, implementing, and evaluating traffic‑management solutions in response to planned events and non‑recurring incidents that impede normal traffic flow.
  • Knowledge of evaluating the effectiveness of traffic control methods and devices, including signs or pavement markings.
  • Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
