UNC Johnston Endoscopy is a fast-paced procedural unit located in Smithfield. It is a hospital-based endoscopy department. There is an opportunity for medical professionals to grow, learn and develop into GI experts. The unit operates up to 2 procedural rooms daily with an average case load of 12 cases per day. The team emphasizes camaraderie and peer support to foster a healthy work culture.

Hours of operation are Monday–Friday from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM with some rotating on-call time after hours.

You will work with a phenomenal team of doctors and experienced nurses who perform endoscopic procedures such as colonoscopies, upper endoscopy, esophageal and colon stents, manometries, the capsule, ERCPs and bronchoscopies. Nurses are trained to work across patient care areas (pre, intra, and post procedure). Training is provided to perform various roles, and the team is committed to delivering quality services.

The team prioritizes patients, and opportunities may exist to cross-train to other perioperative areas once proficient.

• Clerical:
  Use the computer scheduling system to schedule endoscopy procedures at mutually acceptable times. Perform receptionist/clerical duties as needed. Order and stock supply inventory, prepare rooms and equipment to accommodate patient load. Run errands as necessary to lab, pharmacy, or other departments. Understand operation, function and handling of equipment and supplies.
• Clinical:
  Assist physicians and registered nurses with endoscopic procedures under supervision. Utilize instruments during procedures. Assist with delivery of direct nursing care, patient admission and discharge, patient identification and vital signs. Document/ chart on forms as required. Assist with patient positioning and collection/preparation of endoscopy specimens. Demonstrate cooperation with physicians and nurses while responding to patient/family needs.
• Professional Development:
  Maintain BLS and competencies as prescribed by the department Endoscopy Technician checklist. Attend in services and organizational meetings.
• Technical:
  Complete required training and competencies for high-level disinfection (HLD) processes. Demonstrate proficiency in reprocessing and maintenance of endoscopes and related equipment per infection prevention and manufacturer instructions. Maintain automated endoscope reprocessors (AERs) and related equipment. Ensure correct hookups and adapters for channeled scopes reprocessed in AERs. Monitor chemical levels and ensure adequacy according to manufacturer instructions. Communicate scope repairs, loaners, supplies, and quality improvement information, and maintain related documentation.
  
  Follow PPE protocols in the reprocessing area and maintain supplies and records according to center policies.

• Education:
  
  Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technology program or a High School diploma or GED.
• Licsensure/Certification:
  If a High School diploma or GED, either (a) listed as NC Nursing Assistant I or (b) one year of endoscopy technician experience. If graduated from an accredited Surgical Technology program, then NC NA I or ST certification is not required.
• Experience:
  
  Prefer one year of relevant healthcare experience.

  Basic clinical support skills, ability to learn and adapt in a fast-paced endoscopy setting.
