Position: Sister/ Charge Nurse

Job Overview

This Band 6 Junior Sister/Charge Nurse role on Ward 10 (Surgical Ward) at Wexham Hospital offers a leadership opportunity within a busy 26‑bed surgical unit caring for general surgery and urology patients. The ward manages both emergency and elective admissions, including post‑operative and ICU step‑down patients. The postholder will support the Senior Sister in leading a multidisciplinary nursing team, ensuring safe, high‑quality patient care and fostering a positive learning culture.

Responsibilities include clinical leadership, staff management, training and development, and quality improvement.

Main duties of the job
  • Responsible and accountable for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care without supervision.
  • Assist the Senior Sister in leading the ward team in providing 24‑hour nursing and operational management whilst ensuring a high‑quality service with cost‑effective resources.
  • Lead and monitor the performance and standards of care within the Nursing Team.
  • Act as a multi‑disciplinary team leader taking the lead on projects as appropriate.
  • In conjunction with the Ward Manager/Senior Charge Nurse and other Junior Sister/Charge Nurse, facilitate the development of the service and personal development of all nursing staff within the clinical area of responsibility.
  • Depute for the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in their absence, attending appropriate meetings, maintaining an organised and structured workforce.
  • Previous clinical experience working in a SADU or ITU environment.

Qualifications
  • Current NMC Registration
  • Evidence of recent Continued Practice Development
  • Nursing degree or working towards a degree.
  • Mentorship/teaching course.
  • Desirable:
    Leadership Course.
Skills / Abilities
  • Leadership skills - management
  • Professionalism - communication
  • Teaching and assessing experience.
  • Desirable:
    Critical care skills (ability to act and think effectively in case of deterioration/emergency).
Experience
  • General surgical / specialist surgery experience.
  • Experience in audit.

    Critical care experience.
