Position: Fishery Biologist 1/2 (Sitka Port Sampling Supervisor - PCN 115202)

Overview

This flexibly staffed Fishery Biologist 1/2 (Sitka Port Sampling Supervisor) is open to Alaska residents only. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries, is recruiting for a seasonal specialist to lead the Port Sampling Program in Sitka, Alaska.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee collection of biological data from commercial salmon and shellfish landings, including coded wire tags, otoliths, genetic, morphometric, and other biological metrics.
  • Hire, train, and supervise a dynamic team of Fish & Wildlife Technicians and collaborators.
  • Build and maintain relationships with local processors, fishers, and other fisheries stakeholders.
  • Perform sampling and data entry on docks and in processing plants in cold, wet, and noisy conditions, using mobile electronic tablets or paper forms.
  • Complete duty-specific documentation, including daily office tasks and processing plant forms.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or related natural resource field; 24 semester hours in upper‑division biology (or equivalent) required.
  • Minimum 12 semester hours in chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
  • One year of professional biologist experience or master’s degree substitute for required experience.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and problem‑solve without direct supervision.
  • Valid driver’s license; firearm possession required.
