Description:
The OB/Labor & Delivery Nurse performs a variety of nursing care procedures.
Professional knowledge and consideration of specific patient conditions and treatments are required.
The nurse works independently to complete assignments.
Guidelines include physician orders, standards of care, nursing policies, and procedures manuals.
Nursing duties encompass support to individuals and their families during antepartum, postpartum, laboring stages, newborn care, and care of post-surgical C-section patients.
The position utilizes after-hour call services, including holidays and weekends.
On-call responsibilities include responding to emergencies such as trauma and fetal distress C-sections, providing total peri-operative nursing care.
The nurse must react calmly and make sound nursing judgments in emergency situations.
S/he maintains complete accountability for all actions taken during the scheduled shift.
Consultation with the appropriate manager or supervisor is required in difficult situations needing additional input.
The nurse is accountable for proper delegation and supervision of CNAs, LPNs, and other support staff on the unit during the shift.
Key essential functions include implementing safe and therapeutic care for patients with multisystem disease.
Priorities for patient care will be based on acuity and patient preference while anticipating potential problems.
The nurse adapts to changes in patient status and initiates, manages, and documents nursing procedures.
Demonstrating knowledge of equipment use and accurately administering age-specific medications are expected.
Coordination of patient care activities with physicians and healthcare team members is essential.
The nurse initiates actions to reduce risks to patients and facilitates healing through individualized nursing care.
Education of patients and their families on test procedures and disease processes is a vital aspect of this role.
Ongoing evaluation of patient progress and documentation of care provided is required, ensuring confidentiality of patient information.
Planning and completing patient care in the C-section post-surgical and obstetrics unit is crucial.
Close monitoring of patients post-surgery and providing total patient care from recovery to discharge is expected.
Focused 1:1 care during labor, including nursing interventions and labor coaching, will be provided.
The nurse monitors fetal heart rate tracing and cares for high-risk maternal and neonatal patients.
Support for breastfeeding and consultation will be offered as part of patient education.
Triage of OB phone calls and unscheduled outpatients will be managed to ensure safe care provision.
Participation in assisting with bedside procedures and performance of well-baby checks is part of the role.
Supervision and delegation of tasks to support staff are expected.
Continuous education to maintain current standards in fetal heart monitoring is necessary.
Compliance with established standards of care is required throughout all duties.
The nurse engages in ongoing education and assists in training new staff.
Effective communication with patients, families, and the healthcare team is essential for support and care delivery.
Participation in departmental staff meetings and compliance with policies and procedures is required.
The nurse completes annual competencies, maintains certifications, and engages with ongoing professional development.
Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
The nurse will take on-call shifts as assigned.
