Position: Adventure Therapy / Eco Therapy Outreach & Support — Develop

Ameri Corps members serve 36–40 hours per week in either 1200‑ or 1700‑hour full‑time terms, contributing as tutors, mentors, outreach workers, and community organizers. They live in co‑housing communities, share household responsibilities, and dedicate about 10% of their service hours to community engagement, helping them build connections with local organizations and groups. Because of Alaska’s geography and transportation limitations, members must commit to a full‑time term.

Training emphasizes leadership development, conflict resolution, and critical‑thinking skills. Sitka’s walkability allows most transportation to occur on foot or by bicycle, with housing centrally located.

Position Summary

Sitka Ameri Corps members support the community through a healing‑centered, culturally responsive program model. They build relationships through individual and group support, mentoring, and mental‑health enrichment activities to foster resilience and long‑term success for adults in recovery. Open communication, flexibility, interpersonal strengths, and proper outdoor gear are key to a successful experience.

Description of Duties

Members deliver direct services, coordinate outreach, and strengthen program resources using adventure‑based and ecotherapy approaches such as nature‑based play, expressive arts, outdoor activities, and mindfulness. Early in the term, they focus on understanding the Residential Program, building rapport with clients, and reviewing Adventure/Ecotherapy literature. As they grow more confident, they develop training materials and activity plans for staff working with diverse client populations.

This role aligns well with individuals interested in mental or behavioral health, outdoor behavioral health, or adventure therapy.
