Community Organizer Performing Arts

Members help strengthen developmental relationships through enrichment activities, academic support, mentoring, mental health‑aligned assistance, and life skills programming. Members serve 36–40 hours per week, with available service terms of 1,200 hours (full time) and 1,700 hours (full time). Members live in intentional co‑housing, sharing responsibilities such as cooking and cleaning. To deepen community understanding, members may dedicate up to 10% of service hours to activities beyond their primary placement—such as participation in local clubs, faith communities, support groups, or tribal communities.

Because of Alaska’s geography and the immersive nature of this program, applicants should be prepared to commit to the full service term. Leadership development—including skills in self‑leadership, conflict resolution, and critical thinking about service—is central to the experience. Transportation is typically by foot or bicycle in Sitka’s walkable community, with centrally located housing and free public transit available.

Members engage with the community using a healing‑centered and culturally responsive approach. They build developmental relationships that strengthen youth resilience through academic support, mentoring, mental‑health‑aligned strategies, life‑skills instruction, and enrichment activities. Members act as positive role models for at‑risk youth and contribute meaningfully to their growth. Success in this role depends on clear communication, collaboration with staff, and adaptability, especially in a community that experiences varied weather and shifting daily needs.

Sitka Fine Arts Camp (SFAC), founded in 1973, builds community through arts opportunities. Its programs include a nationally recognized summer arts camp, performing arts series, artist residencies, and in‑school arts programming.

• Represent Ameri Corps by wearing designated gear.
• Coordinate volunteers at the Sitka Performing Arts Center.
• Build relationships with visiting artists.
• Manage the complimentary ticket program for local organizations and schools.
• Train and coordinate ushers for events at the Sitka Performing Arts Center.
• Assist with coordination of the SFAC Performing Arts Series.
• Develop and manage youth outreach programming related to the Performing Arts Series.
• Strengthen community engagement for SFAC programs.
• Support the Young Performers Theater program.
• Provide backstage and production assistance as needed.
