Education and Experience
  • Associate's degree equivalent to four (4) years of experience
  • Bachelor's degree equivalent to eight (8) years of experience

Under the supervision and direction of the Xaa-wan’-k’wvt Head Start Manager, the Cook supports the Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation’s (TDN) Mission Statement, ensures compliance with the Office of Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS), and manages the provision of nutrition services, such as the physical health component, including the day‑to‑day operations of the center garden and composting. Ensures nutrition services are culturally and developmentally appropriate.

To meet each child's daily nutritional needs and feeding requirements, children with special dietary needs and children with disabilities. Meals are served Family style per 1302.31(e)(2). The Cook completes and submits USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), Office of Head Start, and Child Care and Development Funds (CCDF) program documentation and reports to ensure guideline and requirement compliance.

All Tolowa Dee‑Ni’ Nation employees must submit to a background check and abide by all Tribal, federal, and state laws. All employees must comply with Tolowa Dee‑Ni’ Nation drug‑free workplace policy and will be subject to pre‑employment, random, for‑cause, and post‑accident drug and alcohol testing. Current physical exam/tuberculosis test clearance, Hepatitis B series I, II, III complete. Qualified American Indian Preference applies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plans the monthly nutritional meal calendar or cycle menu for fifty children ages 0‑5 years old. Posts the daily menu and adhere to the daily meal plan as per dietary standards. Post all scheduled meals daily. Prepare breakfast, lunch and snacks for up to 50 children. In addition, support safety and supervision of children during meal service.
  • Preparing and cooking meals for the classroom and field trips, ordering and shopping for food and supplies, and cleaning kitchen facilities.
  • Work with teachers and/or family services staff to submit referrals for nutritional concerns, as needed. Ability to promote positive working relationships with students, families and co‑workers.
  • Provide bi‑weekly nutrition education in classroom and weekly “I am Moving, I am Learning (IMIL)” activities.
  • Shop for groceries and kitchen supplies and maintain inventory. All shopping occurs during scheduled work hours. Use Tribal vehicles for all scheduled shopping expeditions. Ability to manage petty cash and maintain security of petty cash.
  • Track Body Mass Index (BMI) that includes heights and weights of children 3 times per year.
  • Attend training conferences/meetings with site staff and parents to keep abreast of current requirements.
  • Work with teachers and/or family services staff to encourage parental/guardian involvement in nutrition programs through activities such as cooking, sharing Cultural foods, and budgeting classes for families.
  • Implement cultural foods into monthly menu planning. Employees should display a willingness to learn Tolowa Dee‑Ni’ Wee‑ya’ and apply the Tolowa language in the workplace.
  • Submit monthly USDA/CACFP reports through Child Nutrition Information and Payment System (CNIPS) and Meal Production Records (MPRs). Monthly reports submitted to the Head Start Manager and Policy Council.
  • Lead and record Fire, Earthquake, Tsunami Drills monthly and Intruder Drills 2 times a year.
