Job Description & How to Apply Below
We achieve this through enrichment activities, academic support, mentoring, mental health and life skills assistance, and capacity building. Ameri Corps members typically serve 36-40 hours per week in roles such as tutors, mentors, outreach workers, and community organizers. Members live in shared co housing, collaborating on cooking and cleaning. We encourage members to dedicate 10% of their service hours to community engagement outside their primary roles.
Members often connect with local clubs, faith groups, and support networks, gaining insights into the community's dynamics. Given Alaska's unique geography, applicants must commit to a full time year of service, with preference for local candidates. Leadership development is a core component of the Sitka Ameri Corps Program. Members undergo training to enhance leadership skills with a focus on self management, group conflict resolution, and effective community service.
Transportation is primarily by foot or bicycle in Sitka's walkable community, with public transit available. Position Summary Sitka Ameri Corps members engage with the community using a healing centered and culturally responsive approach. The goal is to develop relationships that support academic success, mentoring, mental health, and life skills development. These relationships help build resilience in youth and contribute to improved long term outcomes.
Members serve as positive role models for youth who may be at increased risk and can have a meaningful, lasting impact. Successful Ameri Corps members prioritize communication with staff to effectively support students and ensure their own needs are met. Flexibility, open communication, and good rain gear are essential. Further help on this page can be found by clicking here.
