Academic Tutor & SEL Support

Purpose The Sitka Ameri Corps Program addresses the impacts of high ACEs in rural Alaska by building strong developmental relationships through enrichment activities, academic support, mentoring, mental-health and life-skills development, and capacity building in schools and youth-serving organizations. Members serve 36-40 hours per week as tutors, mentors, outreach workers, and community organizers. They live in shared co-housing and contribute to communal responsibilities such as cooking and cleaning.

Members also devote about 10% of service hours to activities beyond their primary placement, including participation in local clubs, faith or tribal communities, and other supportive networks. Given Alaska's geography and transportation challenges, members commit to a full year of service, with preference for individuals connected to Alaska or familiar with rural living. Leadership development is central to the program, with training from Ameri Corps and host sites in self-leadership, conflict resolution, youth development, and effective service practices.

Sitka's walkable layout allows most transportation by foot, bicycle, or free public transit. Position Summary Members serve using a healing-centered, culturally responsive model focused on strengthening youth resilience through academic support, mentoring, and enrichment activities. They help create nurturing school environments, build positive relationships, and act as steady role models for youth. Success in the role requires strong communication, flexibility, and comfort working in Sitka's variable weather.

Member Duties :

Description of Duties Members work with school staff to create enrichment and learning opportunities, adjusting duties each year based on needs and service gaps. Activities include developing literacy or math content, supporting classroom behavior systems, fostering safe and supportive learning environments, and strengthening social emotional skills. Members provide after school homework help, one on one academic support, and model positive behavior.

They build developmental relationships during lunch and recess, assist with team teaching, chaperone events, and lead enrichment or culture classes. Additional duties may include tutoring, library support, preparing lessons, offering supplemental math instruction, coaching Battle of the Books, assisting with PE classes, lifting materials as needed, and representing Ameri Corps by wearing program gear.
