Physician - Lead General Surgeon

This position provides supervision and leadership of the Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center (MEMC) surgical program and outreach to Wrangell Medical Center (WMC). The provider participates in direct patient care across all MEMC locations, including the OR, inpatient units, outpatient clinics, and emergency department. The role involves program planning, staff supervision, and ensuring high-quality surgical care across the facility and other SEARHC communities.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide surgical care in OR, inpatient, outpatient, and ED settings, including evaluations and treatment planning for patients of all ages.
• Coordinate surgical service coverage, supervise clinical staff, and participate in policy development and quality improvement activities.
• Supervise surgical providers, including general, orthopedic, and specialty surgeons, and collaborate with the Medical Director.
• Lead surgical meetings, oversee peer reviews, and ensure compliance with clinical policies and procedures.
• Participate in medical staff functions, quality assurance, and serve as a liaison to healthcare providers in Southeast Alaska.

Qualifications:

• M.D. or D.O. with completion of an accredited surgical residency.
• Board certification in a surgical specialty.
• Active Alaska Medical License.
• ATLS and ACLS certifications are preferred or required based on specialty.

Knowledge and

Skills:

• Knowledge of surgical practices, anatomy, and emergency trauma management.
• Clinical judgment, surgical skills, communication, and leadership abilities.
