EquipmentOperator Summary/Objective
As an Equipment Operator at First Rate Excavate, you will play a crucial role in our operations by safely and efficiently operating heavy equipment, such as skid loaders, bulldozers, excavators, loaders, backhoes, and road graders. This is a Safety-Sensitive position. You will be responsible for performing various tasks, including but not limited to excavation, grading, snow plowing, and material handling, while performing a variety of semiskilled tasks in the maintenance of light, street, and storm drainage systems.
EssentialFunctions
- Safely operate and maintain heavy equipment according to company and industry standards.
- Conduct pre-operational equipment inspections to ensure proper functioning and identify any potential safety hazards.
- Execute excavation, grading, and material handling tasks with precision and efficiency.
- Follow established safety procedures and guidelines at all times, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Collaborate with on-site teams to coordinate and prioritize tasks, ensuring timely completion of projects.
- Report any equipment malfunctions or safety concerns immediately to the maintenance supervisor.
- Adhere to environmental regulations and company policies related to the responsible handling of materials and waste.
- Participate in safety meetings and training sessions to stay current with industry best practices and regulations.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, including equipment storage and maintenance areas and work trucks.
- Plows snow and salt roads according to departmental policy.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and actively contribute to a culture of safety excellence.
- Maintain a driver’s license and/or CDL.
- Proven experience as an equipment operator, with a focus on safety-sensitive tasks.
- Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with the appropriate endorsements or able to obtain.
- Knowledge of and ability to operate various heavy equipment, including but not limited to bulldozers, excavators, loaders, etc.
- Strong understanding of safety regulations, protocols, and best practices in the heavy equipment operation industry.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Physical fitness and stamina to perform the duties of the job in various weather conditions.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to follow instructions accurately.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.

The employee is frequently required to stand, talk, and listen. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Local travel to various work sites is required. Some out-of-town work.
RequiredEducation and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a recognized heavy equipment operator training program is a plus.
- Relevant certifications/licenses for operating specific types of heavy equipment.
- On-the-job training as required.
