Overview

The Regional Communications Manager role connects people to the American Red Cross mission and services across the region through strategic communications, media relations, digital engagement and storytelling. This position supports all Lines of Service and functional areas with integrated, people-centered communications and requires collaboration with program and functional leaders and volunteers. It involves both ongoing communications and disaster public affairs, with sound judgment and calm decision-making in fast-moving environments.

This is a hybrid position requiring travel. The ideal candidate will live no more than 75 miles from the Sioux Falls, SD Chapter.

The Regional Communications Manager plays a key role in connecting people to the American Red Cross mission and services across the region. Through strategic communications, media relations, digital engagement and storytelling, this position helps advance regional priorities, increase public understanding and engagement, and ensure communities know how to access Red Cross support when it matters most. The role supports all Lines of Service and functional areas through integrated, people-centered communications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Media Relations:
    Work with regional leadership to execute media relations strategy, maintain media contact relationships, craft news releases, pitch stories, respond to local media inquiries, arrange interviews, and provide Red Cross-approved information and stories. Serve as a Red Cross spokesperson, train staff and volunteers, review requests, and develop an effective communications strategy.
  • Public Affairs and Crisis Communications:
    Support disaster public affairs activities, train and coordinate disaster public affairs volunteers, contribute to crisis communications planning, messaging, and execution, and deploy to support disaster response operations as needed.
  • Social Engagement:
    Implement a regional social media strategy aligned with enterprise-wide and regional priorities; develop platform- and audience-specific content, monitor activity, respond appropriately, and escalate issues when necessary.
  • Marketing Support:
    Support integrated marketing and program campaigns, collaborate with Development and Marketing partners to deliver communications that motivate giving and involvement, and encourage staff to use approved brand tools and resources.
  • Internal Communications:
    Develop and execute strategic and change-management communications.
  • Volunteer Engagement:
    Support the Regional Communications Director in building, engaging, training and supervising a regional communications and disaster public affairs volunteer team.
  • Scope:
    Individual contributor role requiring full proficiency; works independently and may coach other professionals.
  • What You Need to Succeed (Minimum Qualifications)
    • Education: Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, public affairs, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
    • Experience: Minimum three to five years of related professional experience in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or public affairs.
    • Willingness to serve as a media spokesperson; prior spokesperson or crisis communications experience preferred.
    • Skills & Abilities: Exceptional oral and written communication skills, proficiency in AP Style; strong writing and storytelling abilities; high fluency in social media with platform-specific content; high emotional intelligence and empathy; strong judgment and flexibility; excellent organizational, planning, and follow-through skills; experience with Microsoft Office, media monitoring tools, social media management platforms, website content management systems, and other marketing tools; strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
    • Travel:
      Travel may be required approximately 10-25%, depending on regional needs.
