Join Our Team as an Industrial Automation Sales Engineer!

Direct Companies is currently seeking an Industrial Automation Sales Engineer to join our team. This role is responsible for driving new business development and growing existing client relationships by delivering high-quality industrial automation and controls solutions. You will work directly with industrial and manufacturing customers to identify process improvement opportunities and provide automation solutions that enhance reliability, efficiency, and performance.

As an Industrial Automation Sales Engineer, you will serve as a key link between our clients and our technical teams—guiding projects from early-stage conversations through proposal development and long‑term account growth.

Position Summary

The Industrial Automation Sales Engineer is responsible for executing the full sales and client pursuit process, including introduction, qualification, discovery, solution development, and issue resolution. This role requires a strong understanding of industrial automation systems, controls architecture, and system integration principles, along with the ability to align technical solutions with operational needs.

You will collaborate closely with engineering and project teams to develop accurate scopes of work, resolve technical challenges, and deliver complete and professional sales proposals. This position plays a critical role in strengthening client relationships, expanding automation services within existing accounts, and representing Direct Companies in the marketplace.

Key Responsibilities New Business Development & Sales Execution
  • Execute the complete sales process from prospect identification through opportunity development and close

  • Conduct on‑site and remote discovery discussions to identify automation and controls improvement opportunities

  • Leverage internal engineering resources to develop accurate scopes and comprehensive proposals

  • Identify, qualify, and expand automation services within existing client accounts

  • Document and track all leads and opportunities within the sales pipeline

  • Communicate client feedback, risks, and growth opportunities to Sales Management and internal teams

Automation Client Relationship Management
  • Maintain clear, professional, and timely communication with clients in all circumstances

  • Accept and drive resolution of client issues related to automation and system integration projects

  • Coordinate effectively with internal technical teams while maintaining ownership of client relationships

  • Prepare and deliver accurate proposals, presentations, and related sales materials

  • Build long‑term partnerships that drive client satisfaction, retention, and account growth

Brand Awareness & Industry Representation
  • Promote Direct Companies’ automation services and value proposition in the marketplace

  • Represent Direct Companies at trade shows, industry events, and networking functions

  • Communicate accurate and consistent messaging about our capabilities and company culture

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in industrial automation, controls, or technical sales

  • General knowledge of PLCs, DCS systems, instrumentation, motor controls, and system integration

  • Strong understanding of automation controls architecture

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

  • Ability to manage multiple client opportunities simultaneously

  • Team‑oriented mindset with strong relationship‑building skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field

  • Five or more years of experience in industrial automation or system integration

  • Previous technical sales or account management experience

  • Experience in manufacturing, water/wastewater, or industrial processing industries

  • Strong presentation and proposal development skills
