The Charge Nurse provides leadership and oversight of client care by supervising nursing and behavioral health staff, ensuring adherence to the treatment program, and maintaining a safe, ethical and therapeutic environment. This role serves as the on‑duty clinical leader during assigned shifts, supports continuity of care, and upholds all regulatory, accreditation and organizational standards. The Charge Nurse collaborates as part of a multidisciplinary team to support individuals and families engaged in addiction and behavioral health treatment.
Qualifications- Current Iowa RN license
- Demonstrated experience in addiction, behavioral health, or psychiatric nursing
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to complete documentation accurately and within required timelines
- Ability to coordinate and deliver educational lectures or presentations for clients, staff, or community groups
- Computer proficiency required
- CPR and First Aid certification
- Work scheduled hours and remain available for regular on‑call duties, including finding coverage or working directly.
- Attend required meetings such as staffing, capacity management, and daily stand‑ups.
- Float between units to provide guidance and support to scheduled nursing and behavioral health staff.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for nursing and behavioral health communication during the shift.
- Act as liaison between staff, Nurse Manager, and Unit Coordinators regarding client and staffing issues.
- Ensure all units comply with treatment schedules and daily programming expectations.
- Provide mentoring, feedback, and support to staff under the direction of the Nurse Manager.
- Assist in onboarding, orienting, and training new employees.
- Assist leadership with staffing and scheduling coverage as needed.
- Assist staff with nursing tasks, behavioral interventions, and crisis situations.
- Supervise and guide staff in managing client behavior, ensuring appropriate therapeutic interventions.
- Review logs and gather essential information from previous shifts, counselors, nurses and other staff.
- Assess physical and medical needs of assigned clients and respond promptly to medical or emotional crises.
- Provide behavioral health and nursing case management for designated clients.
- Ensure adherence to medication management standards, including identification, procurement, storage, education, administration, and monitoring.
- Complete and review documentation to maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and agency policies.
- Follow all physician orders and communicate with external providers or primary care physicians as needed.
- Review medical records for potential admissions.
- Conduct chart reviews and quality audits as assigned.
- Participate actively in infection control practices and maintain current knowledge of applicable techniques.
- Demonstrate competent use of all medical equipment and technology.
- Provide medical education and lectures for clients, families, staff, or community groups.
- Serve as an active member of the Nursing Team and Behavioral Health Team.
- Participate in team meetings, performance improvement activities, and agency initiatives.
- Maintain therapeutic, professional, and culturally competent interactions with clients and colleagues.
- Uphold and model organizational mission, vision, values, and code of conduct.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service and serve as a positive role model for staff and clients.
- Maintain required certifications, including CPR for Healthcare Providers.
