DescriptionThe Department of Defense (DoD) is offering Bachelor's, Master’s, and Doctoral internships or fellowships at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command – Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (USAMRDC WRAIR). This research opportunity is within the Center for Military Psychiatry and Neuroscience (CMPN), Integrated Systems Biology Branch, whose aim is to apply robust and precise molecular‑based solutions for military‑relevant health performance, resilience, and readiness.

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will have the opportunity to apply integrative biology approaches to understanding the etiology of, and finding solutions for, military‑relevant health issues.
Integrative biology research and analyses are designed to understand, compare, and combine animal studies and human studies, computational simulations, and biologics (i.e., products derived from living organisms) acquired from human samples. Medical Readiness Systems Biology’s (MRSB) main research focus is the identification and characterization of biomarkers for PTSD, pain, and host responses to pathogens and radiation.
This Research Opportunity Includes the Following Learning Objectives- Learning whole genome sequencing
- Conducting metabolomic analysis
- Gaining experience in Ingenuity Pathway Analysis
- Conducting analysis of omics data using commercial and publicly available analysis tools for proteomic, genomic and metabolomic
- Learning microbiome analysis using sequencing
- Understanding new animal models for austere environments

What is the Anticipated Start Date?The WRAIR is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the Appointment Length?Appointments are initially for one year with the option to extend the appointment for up to four additional years, contingent upon project needs and funding availability.

The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) aims to conduct biomedical research that is responsive to Department of Defense and U.S. Army requirements and delivers lifesaving products, including knowledge, technology and medical material that sustain the combat effectiveness of the warfighter. WRAIR provides unique research capabilities and innovative medical solutions to a range of Force Health Protection and Readiness challenges currently facing U.S. Service Members, as well as threats anticipated during future operations.
These research opportunities include ongoing efforts to identify and treat traumatic brain injury as well as to understand and mitigate the deleterious effects of repeated exposures to blast.
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of and through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
