Overview

The Certified Medication Technician administers medications to designated residents in a safe and organized manner. Responsibilities include assisting with medications, documenting medication assistance, and resident care. The technician must have strong communication skills to effectively communicate with residents, families, and all team members. They must observe and report changes in residents’ physical condition or behavior and perform other duties of a Resident Assistant.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure that the attainment of Victory Housing, Inc. Mission Statement takes precedence over all decisions and actions.
  • Adhere to Victory Housing policies and procedures, COMAR 10.07.14 regulations, and county, state, and federal guidelines including DOH, CDC, CMS, and OSHA.
  • Implement universal precautions and infectious disease control protocols at all times; wear assigned PPE as policy and requests require.
  • Complete all assigned training including initial orientation, COMAR 10.07.14 requirements, monthly in-services, HIPAA, VHI required personal care and skills modules; participate in required safety and disaster drills.
  • Coordinate with Registered Nurse/LPN on all matters relating to the Clinical Program and Medication Delivery System.
  • Read and document pertinent and objective information in the Communication Log for Resident updates, status changes, and observations.
  • Administer medications and treatments utilizing the EMAR platform. Prepare appropriate medication for med-pass with attention to: correct drug, resident, route, dosage, time, and charting; ensure medications are not expired.
  • Bring medications to the resident in an assigned location and maintain confidentiality of resident medication information.
  • Check photo or ask name prior to administering medication; offer water/juice/applesauce as prescribed and observe swallowing.
  • Document completion of medication administration in EMR; if system is down, document on the paper MAR immediately after each pass; document resident concerns made during med-pass.
  • If a resident refuses prescribed medication, document and report to the Health, Wellness Delegating RN/LPN/Coordinator.
  • Answer resident questions or concerns regarding medications.
  • Return all non-dispensed medication to the cart and lock the cart after completion of medication pass.
  • Wash hands before and after medication pass or when in contact with medications; adhere to universal precautions; hand sanitizer may be used if hands are not soiled.
  • Prepare resident medications for short-term absences from the community and document the medication record legibly.
  • Maintain orderliness and cleanliness of the medication cart and Wellness Center.
  • Restock medication cart with cups and spoons after medication pass as needed.
  • Adhere to narcotics count policy; count, verify, sign, and date narcotics at the beginning and end of each shift.
  • If Health, Wellness Delegating RN/LPN/Coordinator is not at the community, assist with medication delivery by pharmacy and report discrepancies to the Delegating RN/LPN/Coordinator.
  • Assist with resident care and physical support, including after a fall, transfers, toileting, and during emergencies; initiate and complete incident reports per policy.
  • Promote dignity for all residents and support the team in meeting resident needs creatively.
  • Promote teamwork through sharing responsibilities and information with Management, Clinical, and Care Teams; ensure quality of care and a sense of security for residents.
  • Communicate health care and wellness issues with the Health, Wellness Delegating RN/LPN/Coordinator.
  • Serve meals in the dining room with hospitality and customer service; deliver meals on trays to residents as required.
  • Dining room responsibilities include: ensuring residents are seated and assisted, setting tables, placing condiments, beverages, tray stands, and ensuring safe meal service at appropriate temperatures.
  • Assist in serving meals, greet residents, and note their choices; provide seconds or assist with special needs; offer diabetic desserts if appropriate.
  • Maintain a safe environment by following procedures for lifting/transferring, smoking, fire and disaster, reporting unsafe or unsanitary conditions, completing accident reports, storing chemicals, infection control, and assisting housekeeping as needed; report equipment malfunctions.
  • Maintain good public relations, work with coworkers to support the team, and attend monthly staff meetings and scheduled trainings.
  • Answer help and call bells within 3 minutes and take prompt action; assist with answering incoming telephone calls professionally.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
  • Must be current on all vaccinations including COVID-19 and receive CDC recommended booster doses.
