Description
The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) provides a unique opportunity to broaden expertise and experience of an established scientist with an epidemiology background who is skilled in advanced research design, data mining and biostatistical analyses by leveraging complex and varied longitudinal and cross-sectional data using SAS.
What will I be doing and why I should apply?
Under the guidance of a mentor, you will learn how to efficiently harness knowledge, technology and prior experience to provide evidence-based support for the sustainment and improvement of the combat effectiveness and lethality for the Warfighter. WRAIR unique research capabilities will allow to learn and perfect support for military medical standards optimization based on the results of advanced epidemiologic and data science discoveries.
Please see below for learning objectives categorized in several areas of epidemiology:
- Advanced Epidemiological Methods:
- Apply surveillance and epidemiological methodologies to assess trends in military health, medical standards, and retention outcomes.
- Conduct statistical analyses on disability, medical waivers, and service-related health conditions using SAS and other analytical tools, to include assessment of the Medical Accession Records Pilot (MARP).
- Advance statistical approaches to implement Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) and predictive analytic techniques, leveraging the Health Information Exchange (HIE) and other “big data” to provide more real-time epidemiologic surveillance.
- Data Analysis & Interpretation:
- Perform high-level data analyses to evaluate medical standards, risk factors, and health outcomes among military personnel.
- Develop statistical models to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of military health programs and policies.
- Implement data visualization techniques to present findings to stakeholders through technical reports, presentations, and dashboards.
- Leverage data analysis tools to include SAS, R, python, and visualization tools to advance analytic and programming skillset.
- Data Governance & Management:
- Establish and implement best practices for data governance, including data quality control, documentation, and standardization.
- Oversee data curation processes, ensuring data integrity and compliance with DoD regulations and federal health guidelines.
- Design and automate Extract Transform Load (ETL) processes for data extraction, transformation, and loading to improve efficiency and reproducibility.
- Communication:
- Communicate complex epidemiological findings to diverse stakeholders, including military leadership, researchers, and policy developers.
- Contribute to the development of policies and standard operating procedures for data access, sharing, and governance.
- Research & Publication Development:
- Conduct literature reviews using Pub Med and other scientific databases to support manuscript preparation and research initiatives.
- Draft manuscripts, technical reports, and conference abstracts for submission to peer-reviewed journals and professional meetings.
- Present epidemiological research findings at national conferences and stakeholder briefings.
- Professional Development:
- Enhance skills in biostatistics, data science, and epidemiological research.
- Advance knowledge and skills in data programming languages and visualization techniques.
- Participate in professional development opportunities, including workshops, training programs, and interdisciplinary research teams.
