Position DescriptionThis full‑time, permanent, Safety Sensitive position is within the Utility Operations of the Department of Public Works. It is an entry‑level role that allows progression to Wastewater Systems Technician II and III as skills and certifications are earned. An internal training and certification program is provided.
Nature and Variety of WorkThe work involves operating, maintaining, monitoring, and adjusting wastewater treatment plant, booster, or sewage pumping station equipment to meet State, Federal, and local regulations. Employees utilize skills in mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and laboratory work, all while working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Overtime, holidays, weekends, and standby duty may be required.
Examples of Duties and Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Observe all safety rules and procedures.
- Perform administrative tasks such as work orders and inventory.
- Respond to customer inquiries, complaints, and resolve problems.
- Conduct preventive maintenance on plant or pumping station equipment.
- Create, review, analyze, and submit spreadsheets, graphing, and operating and regulatory reports.
- Review, create, and update Standard Operating Procedures.
- Perform and review laboratory testing results; sample collection methods.
- Contribute to the development of performance measurements.
- Conduct sampling duties compliant with regulations.
- Perform a variety of process tests.
- Monitor sludge levels, clean service area equipment, and maintain tanks.
- Assist with mechanical preventive and corrective maintenance of process equipment.
- Perform instrumentation and electrical preventive maintenance.
- Maintain service area equipment and plant vehicles.
- Maintain housekeeping, buildings, and ground maintenance at plants.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Computer hardware and software operation (Cassworks, One World, County View).
- Inventory procedures.
- Department safety policies and procedures.
- NPDES permit tests and compliance parameters.
- Disinfection rate calculations (UV, chlorination, dechlorination).
- Process calculations (F/M ratio, M.C.R.T., sludge inventories).
- Microbiology and nutrient removal kinetics.
- Oxygen level measurement.
- Mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation components knowledge.
- Laboratory techniques and sample preservation.
- Process safety manual knowledge.
- Practical use of electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation equipment.
- Interpretation of blueprints and as‑built drawings.
- Microscope use for microorganism identification.
- Testing equipment use for preventive maintenance.
- Oral and written communication.
- Reading and understanding schematics, symbols, charts, and graphs.
- Corrective action on process upsets.
- Electrical power transfer.
- CPR administration.
- Probe cleaning and calibration.
- Identification of confined spaces.
- Other duties as assigned.
High school graduation; two (2) or more years of experience in plant operations, laboratory work, mechanical, electrical, or instrumentation maintenance; a temporary Class 5A wastewater collection system operator's license; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license. Candidates without a temporary Class 5A license may obtain it at hire and complete required examinations within three (3) years.
Longevity pay is available based on years of service. This safety‑sensitive position requires Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and alcohol testing.
Supplemental Qualifications- Experience in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment and collection systems.
- Experience in mechanical maintenance.
