Summary Description
Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. The teacher monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities, assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP). Physical demands are as required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
Special requirements include attending school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models must successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, including behavioral management courses that cover nonviolent crisis interventions. These teachers are also required to support behavioral interventions.

Knowledge, Skills, AbilitiesKnowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) curriculum for the grade/content range of the position and the MCPS special education program. Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments. Knowledge of teaching elementary math methods if seeking an elementary position. Familiarity with Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA 2015), Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA 2004), and state and federal policies and procedures related to special education.
Ability to provide instructional support, work well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians. Ability to adapt instructional programs and materials appropriately, excellent communication skills, and knowledge of and ability to apply the six performance standards established for the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education. Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment. Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years teaching experience at the level appropriate to assignment (elementary or secondary). Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary may be considered.
Certificate & License:
Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
