Summary

CICONIX is seeking a Museum Specialist (Photography) to support the National Museum of Health and Medicine (NMHM) in Silver Spring, MD.

About the Role
  • Works independently with requester in planning and laying out photographic detail and delivers final photographic work products that meets or exceeds industry standards, government regulations and guidance concerning imaging of museum objects, and processing maintenance of associated metadata.
  • Focused on museum collections photography and takes guidance and direction from relevant staff, specifically the Staff Curator.
  • Independently completes photographic processes in their entirety.
  • Responds to requests for imagery from both internal and external sources and uses their own subject matter expertise to deliver the optimal product(s) to the requester in a timely manner.
  • Based on conditions, selects appropriate camera-film combinations for subject involved.
  • Selects lighting effects (e.g. polarized, stroboscopic, multiple flash, available light), reflectors and filters to produce the desired results.
  • Consults with curators about artifact handling before imaging an artifact.
  • Positions subjects and/or objects with regard to foreground and backgrounds.
  • Discusses what effects or emphasis is desired with both administrative and technical personnel in order to place proper emphasis on particular portions and/or present a true perspective of the unit.
  • Works independently, with and without the requester, conceiving, planning and completing finished product, using traditional photography and electronic imaging to gain required effect.
  • Takes documentary photographs of museum artifacts and exhibits.
  • Takes condition report photographs of museum artifacts going out on loan or exhibit.
  • Provides photographic support for museum events.
  • Processes and disseminates images as directed.
  • Responds to request to provide photographic products from internal or external sources for use in graphic illustrations, posters and brochures.
  • Prepares exhibition-quality materials designed to educate, motivate, recognize and/or supplement/enhance meetings, seminars and conventions.
  • Effectively uses contrasting shapes, textures, mounting techniques and lighting to stimulate and retain the interest of the target audience.
  • Utilizes and develops techniques for adapting and extending present equipment and processes in order to meet unprecedented situations.
  • Operates a wide range of still cameras and auxiliary lighting equipment to photograph evolving technical programs, under laboratory, field and studio conditions.
  • Research program subject matter and requester requirements, explaining general limitations of photographic techniques and practices.
  • Performs specialized still photographic reporting tasks.
  • Performs a wider range of photographic assignments covering various research and development activities.
  • Monitors and reviews relevant government and industry regulations, guidance and provides subject matter expertise to museum personnel.
  • Provides subject matter expertise to all areas of museum mission, when requested.
  • Attends regular meetings, or attends other meetings as needed or directed.
  • This position is expected to work some weekends and evenings.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Three (3) - Five (5) years of experience.
Security & Background Check
  • U.S. Citizenship and a successful background investigation are required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance.
Additional Requirements
  • Willingness to comply with the government vaccination requirements.
