About The Position
Montgomery County Department of Recreation is a nationally recognized and award-winning agency with a mission to provide high quality, diverse, and accessible community-based programs, activities, and services that serve the recreation and leisure needs of the Montgomery County community. The department manages 39 facilities including recreation centers, senior centers, and indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities and provides thousands of programs such as out-of-school activities, aquatics, classes, youth and adult sports programs and leagues, senior programs, and therapeutic recreation.
WhoWe Are Looking For
Montgomery County Recreation is seeking energetic, motivated, and responsible individuals to join our team as Summer Camp Counselors for the summer of 2026! Candidates must be available to work from June through August 2026. As a Summer Camp Counselor, you will support the Camp Director and staff in delivering safe and enjoyable activities for children and youth ages 6 to 21.
This role may also involve assisting with our Senior Adventures Camp, a 3-day camp experience for older adults ages 55 and above.
As a Summer Camp Counselor
, you will:
- Assist the Summer Camp Director and provide support to activities including arts and crafts, dance, exercise, music, sports, games, outdoor play and offsite experiences
- Monitor and lead campers through their daily/weekly activity schedules
- Greet, escort and monitor campers throughout the camp day, assuring their safety
- Set up, take down and maintain equipment
- Resolve conflicts and maintain order among campers, and address behavioral issues and concerns
- Assure that all safety and health protocols are followed, including performing first aid and addressing injuries as needed
- Maintain accurate records, incident logs and other functions
- Demonstrate an understanding of protocols and camp expectations, tactfulness, and excellent customer service!
- Have a valid driver’s license (for job-related duties if needed)
- Be reliable, patient, and have good organizational and communication skills
- Enjoy working with children and youth
- Demonstrate a positive attitude
- Be able to meet physical demands in a recreation environment, participate in outdoor activities, strenuous events
- Be first-aid and/or CPR certified (preferred)
- Plan to attend pre-season trainings, weekly staff briefings/meetings
- Be available to work Monday through Friday from June 2026 through August 2026 and attend mandatory camp trainings (dates TBD)
All candidates will be required to successfully pass a criminal history background check, as well as a child protective services background check. These processes will include State, Federal and Sexual Offender registry checks.
Hourly RateThe hourly rate for this SEASONAL/TEMPORARY position is $19.15.
Camp Counselor positions are available at multiple locations. Applicants with worksite preferences should clearly list the community center/facility on the application and/or resume. Please note that the County reserves the right to place staff at community centers/facilities based on service needs.
Minimum Qualifications- Experience:
Six hundred (600) hours of relevant work experience as a leader or instructor in one or more specialized recreation activities. - Education:
Graduation from high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland. - Equivalency:
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
Camp Counselor position requires a minimum age of 18 years old and a high school diploma before the start of camps on June 29, 2026.
