Description

The Emergency Department RN is responsible and accountable to a group of patients for a designated time frame and provides care to the patients via the nursing process, in collaboration and integration with other health care team members. S/he demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care relevant to the patient(s) under his/her care, applying principles of growth and development over the life span.

S/he assesses and interprets patient data needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to age-specific needs. S/he functions in the role of a primary RN in Triage, Main ED, and Fast Track.

Essential Functions
  • Standard I. Assessment: The Registered Nurse collects health data. Data collection is systematic, ongoing, and data are documented in a retrievable form.
  • Standard II. Diagnosis: The Registered Nurse analyzes assessment data to determine diagnoses and develops a nursing plan of care.
  • Standard III. Outcome Identification: The Registered Nurse identifies expected outcomes individualized to the patient and documents measurable goals.
  • Standard IV. Planning: The Registered Nurse develops a care plan that is individualized to the patient's condition or needs and coordinates with the patient, family, and health care team.
  • Standard V. Implementation: The Registered Nurse implements the interventions identified in the care plan in a safe, appropriate, and timely manner and documents actions.
  • Standard VI. Evaluation: The Registered Nurse evaluates the patient's progress toward attainment of outcomes and revises the care plan as needed.
  • Standard VII. Quality of Care: The Registered Nurse participates in quality-of-care activities and uses results to improve nursing practice and patient outcomes.
  • Standard VIII. Performance Appraisal: The Registered Nurse maintains professional practice standards and seeks feedback for improvement.
  • Standard IX.

    Education:

    The Registered Nurse maintains current knowledge through ongoing education and skill maintenance.
  • Standard X. Collegiality: The Registered Nurse contributes to the professional development of peers and fosters a learning environment.
  • Standard XI. Ethics: The Registered Nurse practices ethically, protects patient confidentiality, and advocates for patients.
  • Standard XII.

    Collaboration:

    The Registered Nurse collaborates with patients, significant others, and health care providers to ensure continuity of care.
  • Standard XIII. Resource Utilization: The Registered Nurse considers safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering patient care.
  • Standard XIV. Training: The Registered Nurse may train and evaluate students from affiliated outside entities or organizations.
Education & Training Requirements
  • Current New Mexico or multi-state Registered Nurse license
  • BLS (AHA)
  • ACLS (AHA) within 3 months from hire
  • PALS (AHA) within 3 months from hire
  • GRMC approved EKG course within 3 months of hire and annually
  • Moderate Sedation Certification within 3 months from hire date
  • CEN preferred
  • ENPC preferred
  • NRP preferred
  • TNCC preferred
  • Emergency and/or critical care experience preferred
  • One year of Medical Surgical experience preferred
