Position: Operator III, Equipment (Street)
SUMMARY
The Operator III is primarily responsible for operating large excavators, dozers, grader, loaders, backhoes, asphalt and milling machine, and other heavy equipment. Also included is the installation of water and sewer main lines and street construction and repairs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees.Contact residents and business owners in area where services will be discontinued and explain when service will be shut off and how soon service will be turned back on.Responsible for safety on roadway and ensuring public safety and health by performing duties by established standards.Ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.Perform routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment, refers defects of needed repairs to supervisor, and cleans equipment.Perform on call duties as necessary.Perform all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.Responsible for street upkeep in the city limits and repair of asphalt or concrete, signs and posts, street and ditch drainage in the city limits.Responsible for installation of storm drainpipe, drain boxes, forming and finishing concrete as directed, and installing curb, gutter, and asphalt. Cut, fit, lay, repair, tap, clean, and flush water and sewer main pipes. Construction of sewer manholes.Perform unskilled manual labor, as necessary, in a variety of maintenance and construction projects within the Street & Infrastructure Divisions.Perform duties regarding inclement weather including applying sand and ice melt as weather conditions require and remove sand on street after improved conditions. Operate snow removal equipment such as dump truck with brine unit, sander unit, snowplows and backhoes as needed for removal of snow and ice.Operating the heavy equipment such as large excavators, dozers, grader, asphalt and milling machine. Also operating street sweeper, backhoes, wheel loader, skid loaders, dump trucks, rollers, mini excavators, and other equipment as needed.Perform required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including laying water and sewer main line, pipe laying and back filling, construction of storm drainpipe, drain boxes, curb and gutter, form and finish concrete, and asphalt related to building of new streets.Operate equipment to set grades on construction projects.Ability to read and interpret blueprints.Traffic control – directing and flagging vehicles.Perform other related duties as required or assigned.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or three (3) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
