Overview

SIERRA MADRE POLICE DEPARTMENT The Sierra Madre Police Department is seeking a qualified law enforcement professional to take on the role of Police Captain. Under administrative direction, the Police Captain oversees the following divisions:
Operation, Patrol and Administrative Services. The Police Captain will act on behalf of the Police Chief as needed and will require a high level of professional judgement and leadership.

The general duties of the Police Captain will include the following: provide strategic leadership and accountability for the planning, development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the City’s law enforcement operations; implements crime prevention and community concern strategies; manages records and budget functions, as well as records management programs; oversees complex initiatives and special projects; serves as a member of the Department’s management team.

Responsibilities
  • Plans, directs, manages and evaluates the programs, functions and services of the Operations or Administrative Services Division, including patrol, traffic, safety, investigation, crime analysis and prevention, communications, property, computer systems and police services.
  • Manages training, supervision and evaluation of divisional employees and participates in the establishment of employee selection and training standards.
  • Establishes division goals and expectations, objectives and performance standards, and provides regular administrative reports and briefings concerning obstacles, accomplishments, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Approves work schedules, staffing, technology, and resource allocations.
  • Oversees divisional enforcement of department rules and regulations; reviews and approves divisional reports, including monthly statistics, developments, and trends.
  • Cultivates relationships with departmental representatives, outside law enforcement agencies, and community associations for program development, personnel recruitment, and case management.
  • Analyzes crime patterns, trends, and resource needs for the division and department; leads the preparation of statistical and activity reports for the division.
  • Administers and oversees State and Federal grant programs, and ensures that applications and performance reports are prepared in a complete and timely manner.
  • Evaluates and coordinates litigation matters and public complaints related to officer conduct, divisional practices, or sensitive community issues.
  • Determines management information needs and reporting requirements.
  • Establishes and controls divisional budget and oversees personnel, operating and capital improvement expenditures.
  • Reports upon staff, City and agency meetings; participates as a member of the Police Department Management Team.
  • May represent Department at community functions and special events on behalf of the Police Chief and act as commanding officer for the second major division.
  • Acts on behalf of Watch Commander or Area Commander in the absence of the Police Lieutenant or sergeant.
