Description:

Wilson Health's Respiratory Therapy Department is comprised of a group of specially-trained health care professionals who work under a physician's order to provide a wide range of breathing treatments and other services. Patients in need of respiratory therapy are often those suffering from asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, AIDS, and other lung or lung-related conditions. Premature infants and accident victims often need the care of respiratory therapists as well.

Job Summary:

Performs the evaluation of cardiopulmonary function, the treatment of cardiopulmonary impairment, the assessment of treatment effectiveness, and the care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities associated with the cardiopulmonary system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Under the direction of the manager and supervision of a licensed respiratory care professional, assists in meeting the physical and emotional needs of the patient.
  • Students may perform the following duties that are checked off by an approved educational program director, on the Verification of Education form provided by the Ohio Medical Board. The student is eligible to perform procedures ONLY within the scope of practice and skill area documented by the educational program director:
    • Administers medical gases and uses equipment such as masks, cannulas, oxygen hoods, face tents, trach masks, and t-piece setups.
    • Monitors and records the results of medical gas administration.
    • Administers aerosols and humidification.
    • Administers, monitors, and records the results of aerosolized medications.
    • Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
    • Performs bronchopulmonary hygiene—postural drainage, suctioning, and sampling; applies, maintains, and instructs in the use of airway management.
    • Applies, monitors, evaluates, and records the results of mechanical ventilation.
    • Obtains arterial samples for testing.
    • Analyzes, tests, measures, and monitors blood and gas samples.
    • Administers and delivers non-aerosolized medications.
    • Performs electrocardiograms, pulse oximetry, and peak flow monitoring.
    • Performs daily maintenance and other maintenance procedures on the blood gas analyzers as assigned or required.
    • Cleans equipment on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis as assigned or required; assembles, inspects, and tests all equipment to ensure that it is functioning safely and efficiently.
Qualifications:
  • The student must be actively enrolled in an AMA approved educational program for Respiratory Therapy and/or be eligible as Registered by the NBRC.
  • He/she must be a limited permit holder by the State of Ohio Medical Board BLS Certification.
  • Student must be a second year student in an approved Respiratory Therapy program.
