Senior Staff Nurse – Ophthalmology Department

We are seeking experienced Ophthalmology Nurses currently working at the equivalent of a Band 5 who are motivated to develop their intravitreal injection skillset or who already possess this competency.
This role element includes two weekly intravitreal injection sessions at a Band 6 level, which does include flexibility to cover additional ad‑hoc sessions during planned or unplanned staffing gaps. The post involves cross‑site working across our South Sites Ophthalmology Services at Orpington Hospital and Queen Mary’s Hospital.

You will need strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, ensuring patients move safely and efficiently through their appointments.
Main duties of the jobMain Duties and
Responsibilities include:
- Provide expert, holistic, and high-quality care to patients and their families within King’s College Hospital.
- Take direct managerial responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of, or as delegated by, the Ward Sister, Charge Nurse, or Head of Department.
- Assist in the leadership, supervision, and development of a designated group of nurses within the department.
- Act as a clinical resource within the ward and across the Care Group as required.
- Undertake two intravitreal injection sessions per week, plus an additional session every other week to support unplanned/planned activity or injector leave.
- Serve as a positive role model for junior staff, promoting a culture of high-quality, courteous, patient-focused care.
- Ensure patient confidentiality is always upheld and that professional standards are consistently maintained.

The essential criteria include being a Level 1 NMC registered nurse with relevant specialty knowledge and experience, who is either already competent as an intravitreal injector or willing to develop this enhanced scope of practice as part of their ophthalmology nursing role.
It is desirable that candidates have previous experience in leading and managing a team.
