Overview

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is seeking a Senior Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Biochemistry. The closing date is 16 February 2026. The successful applicant will be HCPC registered, may hold or be working towards an MSc, and will join the Biochemistry Section at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

The post involves management and deployment of staff within the Blood Sciences laboratory. You will lead the Biochemistry section and ensure that all aspects of the technical performance are of the highest standard. A Roche equipment refresh will be undertaken in the next few months. The department is an approved IBMS/HCPC training laboratory and continuous professional development is actively encouraged.

Main duties
  • Assist the Head BMS and other senior staff in the management of the department's sections.
  • Manage and deploy staff within a section(s) of work; be familiar with local policies (e.g., health and safety, HR) and ensure adherence by self and staff in your section.
  • May deputise for the Deputy Head BMS in their absence and take direct responsibility for the department.
  • Provide cover for other senior specialists within the department.
  • Perform a range of senior specialist activities and provide highly specialist advice to clinicians and other service users.

This post is based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, though candidates may be required to work across sites.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) is the main provider of acute hospital care for more than 500,000 people from Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and mid Wales. Pathology provides services to the Trust and multiple CCGs and health boards.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • BSc(Hons) in Biomedical Science or related subject
  • Registered with HCPC as Biomedical Scientist
  • MSc or equivalent in relevant discipline
  • Relevant IBMS Specialist Diploma(s) or Equivalent
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • IBMS Certificate of Extended practice
  • Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science
  • Diploma in first line management
  • Relevant Higher Specialist Diploma
Knowledge & Experience
  • Extensive practical experience of Biomedical procedures in a relevant discipline; gained through working in an NHS environment or equivalent
  • Experience of managing/supervising junior staff and students
  • Advanced theoretical knowledge and practical experience of Biomedical procedures gained through MSc or equivalent and consolidated through the completion of an IBMS Specialist Diploma or equivalent in a relevant discipline
  • Sound understanding of Health and Safety
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Knowledge of Quality Management Systems, Quality Assurance & Laboratory accreditation
  • Able to work autonomously and lead specialist section(s)
  • Advanced grasp of technical/mechanical aspects of instrumentation
  • Adept at problem solving, taking the initiative and sound decision making
  • Able to instil confidence and motivate others
  • Good written and communication skills
  • Able to train and support staff to attain full potential
  • Able to concentrate for prolonged periods of time
  • Able to pay meticulous attention to detail and maintain accurate hand-eye coordination
  • Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines
