Overview

The Academic Advisor, Senior Transitions Specialist, works as a member of the LSUS Student Success Center, performing a range of tasks enhancing and supporting our academic advising team and students. This position will serve as a generalist advisor to undergraduate students of all backgrounds and majors, while also monitoring and implementing strategies to ensure that final-year students are guided effectively in identifying their remaining graduation requirements.

Responsibilities include coordinating resources and processes to maximize credit accumulation for timely graduation, guidance through graduation application processes, and support program coordination helping students prepare for transition from college to career. This position fosters personalized advising support aimed at addressing barriers, promoting engagement, and ensuring students are fully prepared for life after graduation.

Reports to the Assistant Director of Academic Advising, Special Populations, and is a full-time, unclassified position. This summary is not intended to be a comprehensive or all-inclusive description of duties.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.

  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in areas such as student success, academic or career advising, or other roles in higher education.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in student personnel services, higher education administration, psychology, counseling, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in academic advising, particularly with graduating students.
  • Familiarity with career services and transition programs for final-year students or graduates.
  • Experience in teaching college-level courses or workshops related to career preparation.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to assess and address student needs with empathy, active listening, and critical thinking, considering diverse backgrounds and stages of development.
  • Deep understanding of student development theories and best practices for supporting college students throughout their journey, with specific focus on supporting final-year transitions out of college.
  • Strong understanding of academic advising processes and their impact on student outcomes and career readiness.
  • Effective time management skills and ability to handle a diverse caseload of students, including those preparing for graduation.
  • Attention to detail and strong administrative skills, particularly in documentation related to academic records and post-graduate planning.
  • Proven ability to cultivate and maintain effective working relationships across university departments and external partners.
  • Capacity to perform under pressure while maintaining professionalism and providing excellent customer service in a diverse environment.
  • Strong ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students, particularly those from diverse backgrounds.
