This series provides and preserves a safe and efficient transportation system, implementing courteous and prompt service to the traveling public. Positions are assigned based on experience and qualifications listed below.
Job Duties Highway Operations WorkerEntry‑level role on the Highway Operations Technician series. Duties include operating motorized vehicles and equipment, pavement care and preservation, landscape care and preservation, roadside shoulder restoration and repairs, signing and striping, delivery of equipment and materials, environmental compliance, vehicle and equipment care.
Highway Operations Tech 1Apprentice classification. Trained to perform advanced duties encompassing all responsibilities of the Worker plus additional tasks as listed.
Highway Operations Tech 2Intermediate level. Performs a broad scope of tasks and may take on scheduling, assigning, and overseeing subordinates, inspecting work, training, and guiding staff.
Highway Operations Tech 3Full‑journey level with supervisory responsibilities. Conducts high‑level highway operations duties, schedules, assigns, inspects, trains, and guides staff.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) Highway Operations Worker- Minimum 6 months of roadway/highway experience, including operating motorized vehicles, heavy‑duty equipment, signing/striping, pavement care and preservation, roadway operations, tunnel maintenance, or landscape care.
- Minimum 1 year of roadway/highway experience with the same skill set as above.
- Minimum 2 years of roadway/highway experience with the same skill set as above.
- Minimum 3 years of roadway/highway experience with the same skill set as above.
- All workers must obtain an Arizona CDL (Class
A) permit within 90 days and a Class A CDL within 6 months of hire. - Tech 1‑3 require a Class A CDL with manual or automatic transmission and a (N) tanker endorsement prior to start. Additional endorsements may be required.
- Register with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.
- Respond to emergency call outs 24/7; must reach the maintenance yard within 30 minutes.
- May encounter extreme temperatures, rugged terrain, high‑speed traffic, and extensive travel.
- Must lift/carry, push/pull 50 lb.
- Hold a current, valid driver’s license and comply with state safety, inspection, and insurance requirements.
- Complete Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification (E‑Verify).
