Contractor - Senior Design Engineer (Vehicle & Suspension)

Role Summary

This contract role is for an experienced Senior Design Engineer specialising in vehicle suspension and subframe systems. You will be responsible for taking mechanical designs from concept through to production, working closely with a Chief Designer and contributing as a key member of the mechanical design team.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Engineering

Lead mechanical design activities across concept, definitive, and detailed design phases.
Produce detailed 3D models, basic stress calculations, FMEAs, tolerance stacks, and 2D drawings.
Develop system and component specifications to meet design requirements.
Create detailed manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, and Bills of Materials.
Ensure correct fit, function, and interaction of components and systems.
Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date layout and design documentation.
Develop component or system design plans and deliver work to agreed timelines.

Collaboration & Delivery

Work closely with manufacturing and process engineers to ensure designs are optimised for manufacture and assembly.
Communicate progress to project management, the Chief Designer, and engineering leadership.
Produce technical reports, documentation, and presentation material as required.
Highlight engineering risks and propose solutions.
Present designs at review meetings and, when required, produce review minutes.
Liaise with suppliers and internal departments to ensure timely information flow.
Engage directly with customers where required.
Ensure all design files and documents are properly maintained and stored.

Continuous Improvement

Stay informed on the latest manufacturing methods, drawing standards, design tools, and technology trends.
Support the development and improvement of design processes and best practices.

Skills & Experience Required

Degree (Bachelor's or Master's) in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
Strong experience as a Design Engineer.
Knowledge and expertise in:
Suspension systems
Subframe design
Steering and suspension components
Experience in automotive, off‑highway, commercial vehicle, or similar sectors (preferred).
Proficient user of CATIA.

Experience with PLM systems (Windchill preferred).
Strong understanding of technical drawings with solid GD&T competency.
Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple design tasks effectively.
Proactive, confident, and able to lead in challenging situations.
Strong communication skills with internal teams, clients, and suppliers.
