Job Title:
Locator Operator – Falcon F5 (Directional Drill Crew)
The Locator Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining the Falcon F5 Locator system to track and guide the drill head during horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operations. This role ensures accurate bore path alignment, proper depth control, and safe drilling practices while avoiding existing underground utilities. The Locator works closely with the Drill Operator and crew members to complete bores efficiently, safely, and within project specifications.
Key Responsibilities- Operate the Falcon F5 locating system to monitor drill head location, depth, pitch, and roll during HDD operations.
- Communicate real-time drill head data to the Drill Operator to maintain bore path accuracy.
- Interpret bore plans, utility maps, and project drawings to ensure compliance with job specifications.
- Track drill head progress and document bore logs as required.
- Identify and avoid existing underground utilities and obstacles.
- Maintain proper calibration and functionality of locating equipment.
- Perform pre-job equipment inspections and troubleshoot locating system issues.
- Assist with potholing, utility verification, and jobsite setup as needed.
- Follow all company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
- Support other crew members with general labor duties when not actively locating.
- 1+ years of HDD locating experience preferred.
- Experience operating the Falcon F5 or similar locating systems.
- Ability to read and interpret bore profiles and construction drawings.
- Strong understanding of underground utility locating and safe excavation practices.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred).
- Knowledge of utility construction (fiber, water, sewer, gas, electric).
- Ability to perform basic equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Strong problem-solving skills and situational awareness.
- Experience with walk-over locating systems and depth verification techniques.
- Ability to stand, walk, and work outdoors for extended periods.
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and uneven terrain.
- Outdoor construction sites including all types of weather.
- Exposure to heavy equipment and underground utilities.
