Position: Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor - (LPMHC/BHIP)

Overview

The MH Clinic Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor (LPMHC) provides counseling and therapy services to Veterans receiving care at the Shelbyville CBOC. In collaboration with the BHIP LPMHC, they evaluate the Veteran's presenting psychosocial problems and facilitate access to resources that can minimize the Veteran's psychosocial stressors.

Responsibilities
  • The Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) Staff - Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor (LPMHC) provides counseling and therapy services to Veterans in the outpatient Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program.
  • Provide evidence-based counseling and/or psychotherapy services to individuals, couples, and families in collaboration with multidisciplinary BHIP staff.
  • Offer group counseling services in collaboration with multidisciplinary mental health staff for Veterans seeking treatment for substance use disorders and mental health concerns.
  • Consult with medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues.
  • Accept additional assignments as necessary to meet program goals or Veteran needs.
  • Complete all clinical charting and documentation required by the Medical Center or healthcare system in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Participate in assigned mental health committees or task forces as appropriate.
  • Represent the Medical Center at professional/program community group/events and committees as the BHIP representative.
  • Participate in ongoing performance improvement initiatives within the assigned Mental Health track.
  • Screen and assess the Veteran’s biopsychosocial needs and barriers to facilitate access to VA and community resources, in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Coordinate information gathering with the Veteran, family/caregiver, and other VA programs to set appropriate treatment goals and timelines.
  • Develop treatment plans using the MHTP software and ensure goals are aligned with patient needs and care plans.
  • Perform duties in alignment with schedule:
    Full Time  or ;
    Telework may be available per VA policy and supervisor discretion;
    Virtual work not guaranteed.
  • Engage in other duties as required by the role and program.
Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship;
    English Language Proficiency
  • Master's or doctoral degree in one of the following, from CACREP-accredited programs:
    Clinical Mental Health Counseling;
    Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling; or a related field
  • Licensure requirements based on grade level (below are summarized):
  • GS-9 (Entry level):
    Completion of education and licensure prerequisites for licensure; unlicensed LPMHCs may practice under supervision as applicable
  • GS-11 (Full Performance Level):
    At least one year of post-master's or post-doctoral experience, licensed to practice at the independent level
  • Evidence of KSAs including ability to engage in intake/assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, continuum of care, and follow-up
  • Knowledge of DSM and ability to formulate treatment goals and apply interventions
  • Ability to use various counseling modalities (individual, group, family) and to work on an interdisciplinary team
  • Proficiency in clinical documentation and use of necessary software (e.g., Telehealth, VHA software)
  • Understanding of relevant statutes, ethical codes, and regulations affecting professional practice
  • Strong communication skills, orally and in writing

Preferred Experience: Experience conducting individual therapy with adult clients.

Additional Notes: Promotion potential exists; references and official qualification standards are available at the VA site. Physical requirements include walking, standing, bending, lifting, and periods of sitting as part of the role.
