Job Description & How to Apply Below

We’re supporting a leading financial services organisation in the appointment of a Software Licensing Analyst to join their Technology function.

This role sits within the central engineering practice and will focus on strengthening governance, processes and controls around the consumption and contribution to Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS).

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong open-source licensing knowledge who enjoys working at the intersection of engineering, legal and risk.

The Role

You will support the definition and enhancement of processes and policies governing the use of open-source software across a large, complex technology estate.

Working closely with engineering teams and Legal, you will assess licensing implications, improve reporting accuracy, and contribute to automation and tooling improvements to strengthen compliance and risk management.

This role requires a detail-oriented, self-starting individual who is comfortable working independently and communicating clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and clearly communicate the implications of FOSS licences to engineering and non-technical stakeholders
  • Document and summarise risks associated with open-source licence types
  • Categorise licences into appropriate risk classifications (e.g. permissive, weak copyleft, copyleft, restricted)
  • Analyse outputs from software licence scanning tools to identify inaccuracies or missing data
  • Review existing open-source usage and recommend policy or control improvements
  • Work with third-party tooling providers to improve licence reporting quality
  • Contribute to the selection, assessment and enhancement of licence evaluation automation
  • Support awareness and training initiatives within engineering teams
What We’re Looking For
  • Strong knowledge of open-source software licensing terminology and licence types
  • Experience working with a range of open-source licences (e.g. permissive and copyleft models)
  • Understanding of copyright, modification and distribution implications
  • Experience working within software development or engineering environments
  • Ability to differentiate between open-source and commercial licensing models
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong written communication skills
  • Experience in regulated or control-driven environments
  • Exposure to Dev Sec Ops  practices
  • Experience working in Agile delivery environments
  • Familiarity with software licence evaluation tools such as Nexus IQ, Black Duck or similar
  • Legal or copyright law exposure
Skills & Attributes
  • Self-starter able to work with limited supervision
  • Highly organised and disciplined
  • Comfortable working to tight deadlines
  • Strong analytical mindset
  • Confident engaging both engineering and legal stakeholders
Working Arrangement
  • Hybrid working – Sheffield-based office presence required
  • Inside IR35
  • Initial contract until end of year, with potential for extension

This is a high-impact role supporting responsible and compliant open-source usage within a large-scale technology estate.
