Overview
The University of Sheffield’s School of Biosciences is recruiting a Research Associate in Biophysics for a fully funded, fixed-term research post based on campus. This role sits within a vibrant research environment that bridges physical sciences and biological questions, advancing our understanding of fundamental biophysical processes. The successful applicant will contribute to a cutting-edge project that explores biophysical phenomena using advanced experimental techniques, with a particular emphasis on ultrafast spectroscopy and time-resolved measurements.
As part of a multidisciplinary team, you’ll design, assemble and operate sophisticated optical systems, conduct experiments, analyse data and help interpret results that could deepen insight into membrane-associated processes and other core biological mechanisms. Through this work you will contribute to scholarly outputs, collaborate closely with colleagues across disciplines, and support the wider research objectives of the institution. (Role context based on public job summaries and typical Biophysics research at Sheffield)
Applicants should hold a PhD (or have submitted their thesis) in biophysics, physical chemistry, physics or a closely related subject area. A strong academic record and research experience commensurate with an early-career research associate position are expected.
Required Expertise, SkillsThe role requires demonstrated expertise in biophysical experimentation, including hands-on experience with ultrafast spectroscopy techniques such as time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC), fluorescence up-conversion or related methods. Candidates should be proficient in assembling and operating complex optical instrumentation and in analysing experimental data. Effective communication skills, collaborative working, and the ability to contribute to research documentation and dissemination are key.
Salary DetailsSalary for this Research Associate post is in the typical range for UK research staff at this level, with indicative figures around £38,784 to £46,049 per annum depending on experience and grade.
